Root Danger! Cobras!

No, honestly. I think Rooting my Desire has made me turn into one of the most panicked creatures on the planet.

Every time I'm pushing a button, I'm expecting it to explode, or bite me. I've read the guides, I've followed the unrevoked steps, I've installed the clockwork recovery and used it to backup - and I still find myself jumping backwards, peering at it from round the corner of the room.

For example - when booting into recovery, selecting backup and clickin 'power' to select it - the screen went off. So I waited. And waited. An hour later, I thought... I'm going to push the power button again. But what if it interrupts it, and it chomps through it? Oh God No...

Fear began to grow. Was it dead? Was it bricked? Had I destroyed it?

Erm no, I just had missed the bit whereby the clockwork recovery mod is controlled by the optical trackpad.

I've now had a shower to wipe the cold, cold sweat away, and am continuing onwards.

So yeah - read instructions - but don't panic... It all makes sense, and it seems to work great.

Honest.

COBRAS! ARRRGHHH!

(...and thanks for a fantastic community for help people!)

HAHAHAHA .. i just know thats how im gonna be aswell when i finally find where i left my knackers and take the plunge ... ;)

Read, read, read, read some more, ask questions then repeat

haha right ok here goes dan .. im quite new to the world of forums so if my lingo's a bit off forgive me haha ....past week or so ive been doing alot of reading up on this rooting lark and you seem to be one of the top boys to ask , ive read your FAQS about rooting and ASD but theres a couple things im not too sure about ... ive got a desire 2.2 on 3 network its unlocked and unbranded there was nothing"3" related on the fone and i get the white "quietly brilliant"on boot up (im assuming that means unbranded right ?? )) and ive used other network sims on it ..... so does that mean i HAVE to do a goldcard ??? i know i keep reading that you really should do but ive also read that you only need to do if your branded ...... i also did that "force apps to sd card without rooting" thing that was on here a couple months ago .. is that gonna be a problem if root ??? ..... thanks in advance dan

ok, to check for sure if you're unbranded look at your software version in settings>about phone.

it will be 2.xx.405.x if its truely unbranded and was bought like that from new. Its the 405 we're looking for. if it is 405, no goldcard required.

Once rooted, do a titanium backup of your apps and their data. Then a nandroid backup (backup via recovery)

Now backup your SD card contents to PC. You can now partition your card if you plan to use a2sd+.

Copy SD card contents back and download your rom. When you flash a rom (do a data wipe too), this will undo the default install location as you have overwritten the rom you did that too.

Then when you restore apps and data, they will restore to default location (which now should be internal memory). Apps on internal memory are then automatically "moved" to the partition.

*** if you have enough space to move all your apps back to internal memory, do this before the backup as it is preferable.

titanium backups up apps, data and settings. However, I use mybackup pro for SMS, call logs etc. Titanium backups are not always fully compatible (system settings) between different roms.

Nandroid is a snapshot and restores your phone to exactly how it is when the back up is taken.
