Help data backup necessary or not for lollipop update

Is it necessary to take data backup before updating lollipop update over to air

I don't know about necessary but I advocate making backups before any system update as the wise choice.

It's not required, but you should always back up important data. Your phone could get dropped, wet, or lost at anytime.

I have not gone to Lollipop on any phone yet.

My personal policy for any major system upgrade (like Jelly Bean to Kit Kat or Kit Kat to Lollipop) ...

• Make a backup before the install.
• Do a Factory Data Reset.
• Wipe the Data Cache Partition if the installation and Factory Data Reset didn't.
• Reinstall all apps from Play Store.
• Restore data from backup.
