Data connection problems with ICS on Samsung Galaxy S2

Hi,

I have tried to find a solution to the following problem on the net but am stuck, so perhaps someone has an idea here:

I got my Samsung Galaxy S2 two days ago, which is a replacement phone for the one I dropped by accident (luckily I was insured). I am on Virgin Mobile UK, which uses T-Mobile and Orange networks. It runs ICS 4.0.3 with Kernel 3.0.15-I9100XXXLP2-CL57619. There are no apps that manage battery life or similar.

The problem that I encountered is that data connection keeps dropping out randomly, as far as I can tell when the reception switches between G3, H and H+. The phone actually shows that there is a data connection (e.g. H next to the little bars showing strong reception and orange and green arrows blinking) and some widgets (e.g. AccuWeather and MetOffice) can get updates (and I can see in the data usage that the odd kb was downloaded), but websites, email, BBC News etc. all stop working, i.e. I do not have an internet connection. Sometimes the data connection springs back to life automatically and I have internet again, for a few minutes, for several tens of minutes, but not reliably. Sometimes I need to reboot or play the old flight mode switch on/off trick, which can take a few minutes to disconnect or reconnect. Also, when travelling back and to work, the phone sometimes takes time to connect when it connects to a new mast.

This was never a problem with my previous S2, which was on an older Android OS (I can't remember which) -- it also was not an issue with my old Nokia E72 that I uses while waiting for my replacement phone. When doing a lot of googling, I read that dropping data connection is a known issue but with the older Android OS but not the new ICS. I wonder if it has to do with my phone now using the Orange network all the time and that the H/H+ signal may be weak in our area, so it keeps switching back and forth between G3, GPRS and H/H+ (which also drains the battery tremendously fast). The old phone used the T-Mobile network. I have tried to manually set to using T-Mobile only but I never got so far that I can select a network (the phone just kept on searching and searching for networks).

I checked that the APN settings are correct for Virgin Mobile, did a factory reset, there are now apps installed to manage battery etc., I read through some xda forums that discuss that on older Android OS this is a known issue and as a work around you can disable H and H+ (which I tried but no luck).

Perhaps anyone has an idea here? I would greatly appreciate this!

Thanks,

Sebastian

PS: Update - VirginMobile help desk says it's because I am on Orange and should be on Virgin by default. Is there a way to set the network selection to manual, I am struggling with this?

Update 2: I think (hope, pray) I solved it. I installed a different ROM for my S2, following these steps How to go back to a stock Android ROM on Samsung Galaxy S2 | Reviews | CNET UK

So far, the data connection behaves perfectly fine - the weird thing that I always had "perfect" connection indicated (all bars were full) disappeared and I actually have no connection in the blind spots of my home, as with all other phones. The phone also runs faster and more stable. The ROM crashed regularly and caused the battery to drain very fast. So, hopefully it was just a poorly built kernel that caused the problem(s). Does anyone know if there are problems with the above kernel?
