Data counter

There must be a way of checking data usage on the phone without recourse to an app; the app gets its data from somewhere on phone and presumably repackages it so its all user friendly and easy to see etc.

I could dispense with the 3G watchdog altogether (just cutting widgets down) if I knew where it was. Is it the packet figure in *#4636 ... ? I doubt it to be honest - the figures seem too small.

I don't think the phone or Android actually counts data sent/received, so the only way to capture that info is with an app like Watchdog. That app gives you a total of data sent and received on your talk plan - if you want to see which apps are using the data and whether it's 3G or wi-fi you could try TrafficStats from the Market.

I think the 3G watchdog and other apps monitor the usage AS the data is sent, and not pick it up from some place. As far as I know, there isnt a way to know without apps. 3G watchdog has been very accurate so far :)
