I was paranoid that Pandora may push me over the 5GB limit so I called Verizon to see what my usage was for the day. They do not even monitor usage unless it is tethered. The customer service rep said I could run Pandora 24/7 for my $30 monthly fee. I don't plan to run it 24/7 but at least now I can run whatever I want with no fears of a high bill.

5gb limit is for tethering, no limit on the phone. I was a very heavy user on my iPhone and rarely ever got up to even 1gb. Of course, I use wireless whenever possible because it's faster. Without wireless, I still doubt I ever would have used more than 2gb.
 
This is good news for when the Sling Box app comes out.

I wonder if you can you tether with PDAnet without paying the verizon tethering fee? If so, will they know you are tethering?

edit: I was wrong, looks like there is no limit.

Also, they do monitor your data usage. If you log into your account on verizonwireless.com and go to the "my usage" section, towards the bottom it will tell you the amount of data used in the current billing period.
 
I still believe there's an unspoken/misleading to their unlimited data. I would still keep an eye on it.
 
I'm finding conflicting information. Reading through the terms of service there is this clause:
Anyone using more than 5 GB per line in a given month is presumed to be using the service in a manner prohibited above, and we reserve the right to immediately terminate the service of any such person without notice.

So in theory, if you are truly doing legal stuff there is no limit but if you go over 5GB they assume you are doing illegal things and can kick you off.
 
Man, if they gave me the boot I would sure press them to give me proof that i was doing anything illegal. I understand you could be doing a lot of illegal downloading or whatever, but if you weren't and they cut you off I would be upset.
 
I work for Verizon and I can confirm a few things.

1. We DO monitor data usage
2. Data usage on your phone (whatever phone it may be) is truly unlimited.
3. 5gb transfer is ONLY for tethering (yes we know when you're tethering)
4. The average user only uses about 2-3gbs a month (non tether)

After singlehandedly selling 23 Droids today, I must say the demand was pretty high, at least in my area. I also was surprised to see a Verizon tab in the market. Very cool

So what happens if someone uses PDAnet to tether without paying the tethering fee?
 
if you constantly reach high data usage every month they will monitor your account. read the terms. it says that if you are suspected of "slowing down the network by using high amounts of data a cap will be put on your usage"

ok, thats not a direct quote, but that is close to what it says.

5GB is the limit if you're using it for non-contract purposes (web browsing, download apps, etc.) If you constantly go over 5GB a month, they'll see what's up, and if they find out you're tethering via PDAnet or whatnot, you could--possibly--have your account terminated. For per contract usage, it's unlimited.
 
Limits are only set on tethering plans and pc cards. not cell phone plans. however, they do monitor cell phone plans for excessive use and will put a cap on your plan if you flagged.
