Help Data Recovery Question

infinito

Lurker
Hello.

Is it possible to recover data from broken phone? I don't mean broken screen, or something like that, this phone is literally in pieces. Motherboard is still in one piece. Model is Sony Xperia C.

Thanks in advance.

Theoretically, yes.
Practically, no.

If the motherboard is still working/usable after whatever event caused the other components to be broken (unlikely, in my opinion), one could theoretically replace all of the other broken components to rebuild the device. But that does sound expensive and again, unlikely that the motherboard is also undamaged.

There's also the (very, very) remote possibility of someone very knowledgeable and technically capable removing the chips from the motherboard and putting them on some other platform to retrieve the data from--this would indeed probably be a very time consuming and very expensive process.

How much are you willing to spend? A forensic recovery outfit could probably do it, but it will cost.

For a DIY job you'll need to be able to boot it and unlock it, so you can use either USB data transfer or USB debugging (depending on what data you need to recover), or run a backup app and copy the backup off. In other words, you'll need to put the motherboard into another phone (or at least connect power and touchscreen to it, but putting it in another phone is the simplest way of doing that). Edit: and this is, of course, assuming that the motherboard is actually functional, which as Scary points out is not a given.

One approach is to put things back into a functional system and recover data using the rebuilt system. Another approach is to read the raw data directly from the memory chips/modules/interfaces, assuming the manufacturer did not put in some anti-tampering mechanism. Knowing or even learning how do the latter requires substantial engineering background, however.
