Data roaming issue on HTC One M8

I recently had a trip to the US (from the UK) and had a problem with data roaming becoming activated on my HTC One M8 (running 5.0.1 - not rooted) without me touching the phone. I had made sure that the data roaming option (settings -> Mobile Data -> Data roaming) was turned off as I didn't want to be charged the extortionate £6/MB fees.

On two occasions (once when the phone was in my bag and once when it was in my pocket) I heard a text message notification and saw that my carrier (O2) was informing my of the charges I would incur whilst I was data roaming. I immediately set the phone to airplane mode but the phone had already performed part of its sync. I've ended up being charged over £20 for these blips.

Has anyone else had their HTC One M8 (or any other phone) turn data roaming on automatically? I can't see how this could have happened, unless there is a bug somewhere in the phone's software.

I've never known this to happen, and I've been roaming with HTC phones (though not the M8) since 2010. However, I personally play safe and turn data off as well as having data roaming disabled.

You didn't receive any MMS while there? That should be distinct from mobile data (with my network it uses a different APN and is charged independently), but it is still using the mobile data interface so if anything is going to "spontaneously" activate data that's the most likely thing I can think of.

Just double checked and I didn't received any MMS. It's baffling isn't it?!

I'll make sure I turn off data completely next time. And I'll ask my carrier if they have any ideas.

Thanks Hadron

It's certainly worth talking to your carrier. They will probably do nothing, but you never know, you might be able to get it waived as a "goodwill gesture" - after all, if the phone was bought with O2 branding (e.g. through an O2 shop rather than say CPW) then it's O2 who approve and release the firmware, in which case if there is a bug then it's arguably their fault ;).

Brought from CPW I'm afraid, though I'm happy not to have to rely on O2 to get my firmware upgraded!

I'll see what mood they are in. :-)
