Data Roaming

I'm heading over to England for a visa interview and I'm taking my Captivate with me (wi-fi access + emergencies etc) I have the "Data Roaming" option unchecked in the settings, will that prevent ALL incoming and outgoing data (emails, applications etc)? Or are there options I have to manually choose?

Edit: Or would it just be better to keep it on airplane mode

I recently took a trip to Canada and had the default setting for data roaming (i.e., off). I could still make and receive phone calls, but all data (i.e., Internet, emails, etc.) had to be done at Wifi hotspots. I did not get charged for any data transmissions during the trip.
