Data usage racking up without using the phone

This is ridiculous. You should call ATT and tell them that you are not even using the phone and unless they can explain and stop this massive data use, you aren't paying for it. Just keep escalating until you get resolution. We shouldn't have to make multiple changes at bedtime just to avoid this. I'm coming from an iphone 3G and avg about 25MB a month using email and internet. If my data usage jumped that much especially when I'm not even using the phone I'd be pretty pissed. Is this an Android thing or does the iphone have this problem as well?

I THOUGHT I read higher up, that someone had a similar issue with an iPhone.

Guys, you need to check your apps. Some apps won't close in the background and will suck your bandwidth. Thats one of the downsides of the wonderful multi-tasking endowed on us. There are apps to check usage.

I would even check the wall-paper you are using. Some wallpapers have been reported to be malware; sending info to China. Again, it has been un-confirmed report so don't take my word as gospel.

I downloaded the advanced task killer app and set it to shut off my apps when my screen turns off. I also got the apndroid app to turn my 3g on and off manually. The only problem is I have to be on wifi to turn the 3g on. And that would be imposible on the road. Anyone know if Im doing something wrong.

Thank god for that option to turn of 3G. My data, for the first 12 days I had it in July was around 100mb of the 200mb I had. However in 2.5 days thus far I am out to 25mb used, although I have hardly used it outside of any WIFI area's. Will check back soon to let you guys know how well this works. This is perfect! Widget is great too!

IN case you forget, someone else mentioned Y5 Battery Saver - it's an app that remembers where you used WiFi, and will automatically turn it on when you're near these remembered WiFi locations.

It works freaking GREAT!

Don't for get to put Advanced Task Killer and 3G watch dog on your Ignore list in Advanced task killer, you don't want to kill those two tasks. There may be a few other things like if you downloaded a clock widget that you wouldnt' want to kill and could put on your ignore list.

I don't have the apndroid app so I can't help you with that one. So far with the advanced task killer set to turn off when screen shuts off, the background data turned off and wifi sleep turned to never I have been doing just fine with data.

Hey I think I figured it out -When I was asking which data plan to get the store employee told me that each data transaction is rounded up to the nearest MB. If that's correct wouldn't it mean if your weather widget updates and downloads 4kb of data that would be rounded up to 1MB? So on on 200MB plan you get, at maximum, 200 data transactions?

I don't see how that is possible. I see data transactions of less than 1MB on my bill all the time. Most people send multiple emails, texts so that limit would not be possible.

After reading this thread yesterday and haggling with AT&T over the phone and in person, I got them to switch back to my unlimited data plan- whew!

Had I known this phone sucks data this badly, I never would have given up that plan to begin with.

Well all I know is that what they told me.

Well all I know is that what they told me.

I'm thinking that person was either misinformed or just didn't know what they were talking about. I've had quite a few data transactions that were less than 1MB, and they come up as the correct amount, not rounded up.

As for the data usage issues some people are having, I have no clue what that is, because I haven't had any issues. I just have the 200MB plan, and in the last billing cycle (new one just started) I didn't even use half that 200MB (though that was over only 13 days I believe). Granted I am on Wi-Fi a lot when I'm at home or visiting my parent's house, and I make sure to do most of my large data transactions (most downloads, Pandora, YouTube,etc...) when on Wi-Fi. However, I have a number of things setup to automatically update at regular intervals, and did so before I found out about turning to the WiFi to never sleep, and even when the WiFi was sleeping with the screen off, I didn't use a ton of data.

One thing that may have helped, I have JuiceDefender on my phone to help with battery life a little, and one of the things it does is while the screen is off, it turns the cellular data connection off, and only turns it on for 1 minute every 15 mins to download updates and such. I'm not sure if that would make much of a difference, but it possibly could.

So after receiving two text messages and watching my data usage climb another 400mb in a day with having no apps open(except app killer and apn on/off app set to off). I decided to go to the at&t store since the only thing 611 would help me with was adding a larger usage plan. Still cant figure it out. the only thing he could say was to do a factory reset on my phone and see if that helps. if not i have till the 12th to return it to dell mobile and get my money back. i love this phone so i'll prob just buy a new one and hope for the best. does anyone know if at&t would still charge me for the crazy usage?

In the past 2 weeks I owned the phone, I used youtube and other apps and watched a 3 hour baseball game on Sling yesterday and only used 677 mb according to my account.

Update on my data usage. i dont want to speak too soon, but im pretty sure that i fixed the problem. I did a factory reset on the phone and kept an eye on every app i downloaded and every setting that i changed on my phone. I guess i must of set something to auto update and couldnt figure out what. i left all the at&t bloatware alone and didnt bother opening them since i wouldnt be using them anyways. i also downloaded NetMeter to keep an eye on my 3g and wifi usage. So far the 3g only goes up when im actually using it. So no more 380,000kb downloads at 4am... Im in love with this phone and am happy that i finally figured out my only major concern with it!

@ T. Time : so, having gone through this painful learning experience, what apps have helped you the most in managing your phone's power usage?

Thanks!
