Help Data Usage - Why is "Phone" app using so much?

Hi All,

I am new to the world of smart phones and have got myself an HTC Desire S, which I am loving.

In order to track my data usage, I downloaded an app to show what I am using and where i am using it.

Other than Facebook and the internet, my biggest usage is coming from the Phone App, which is automatically installed.

In 3 days, it has used nearly 7MB of data - so, in a month, it will use about 70MB. Considering my data allowance is 500MB, this is a substantial proportion of my data.

Can someone tell me why this app i using so much data and how I can stop this?

Thanks for any help.... think I'll be posting on, and reading a lot of, these forums in the next few weeks!

I don't know the normal data use for your phone. A couple of megs a day doesn't sound like a lot.. but I understand your concern with only a 500 MB plan. Hopefully another using your phone can chime in with what is normal data use for the phone app. Welcome to Android Forums. I hope you enjoy your time here.

Hi olbriar,

Thanks for your reply!

In the past 3/4 days, I've used about 10 - 12MB on Facebook and on the internet. And about 3-4MB on other apps that I don't use as regularly, such as Live Score / London Tube Status.

Onavo is tells me that the phone app is my third highest data user, using about 20% of all my data usage since Ive been using Onavo - which is quite a bit considering I didnt download it and don't want it using up my data!

I'd contact Onavo to ask what might be using the Phone app when using mobile data. Sometimes these apps can't be that precise as to which app is using what data and are more general than specific. E.g. they might be using the phone app to represent contact data that's been synced.

Their tech help/support email is support@onavo.com

They're also on Twitter and Facebook.
