Help Data usage

Hi, I'm having a hard time understanding when i'm using up my 200mb usage plan or when my apps are utilizing wifi. Is it that when the wifi visual is on phone that web browser is utilizing that & not taking from data plan? Bear with me please, new to phone.
 
Anytime you see the wi-fi icon in the status bar at the top of the phone, you are connected to a wi-fi network. You can also go into your wi-fi settings and see that you are connected to a wi-fi network.
 
Ok, thanks, it just seems odd because I'm almost only using the web when wifi is on, but I'm already at 65% of my usage for the month. One more question if it's ok not to post new: free games I've downloaded, like "Live Holdem poker" & others don't take up data now that they are downloaded, correct?

You'd have to check each app. If the poker app has you playing against live players, it most certainly does use data. If an app is ad supported, it may also use data to get the ads, even though the app itself doesn't need data.
 
ok, that makes sense, I do see ads on some of these free apps, but it still uses my data even though I have wifi? frustrating!! I'm going to have to upgrade my data plan...

I guess I have totally misunderstood how this all works... lol

I thought that if we are connected to wifi, then anything we do online (web, games, email, etc) are not counted against our data. I thought that it was only counted against data plan limit when you are connected via mobile internet (3g/4G/Edge/etc).

So I am wrong, eh? Drats!

You could always turn your mobile data off when you have wifi on to ensure it isn't using your data plan. I use Widgetsoid and made my own control widget and i can then just tap what I want to turn on and off such as mobile data, wifi, GPS etc

Okay, thats what I have been doing... keeping mobile data off, and wifi on.. then when I go out of the house/away from wifi, then I turn on mobile data only if I actually need to use it... otherwise mobile stays off. So I imagine then I'll be okay with my 2gb plan. I am not a heavy internet user on my phone, mostly just email and texting.

I also took off the check mark where it said to automatically sync
 
Oh one more thing... tonight, I had mobile network OFF, wifi CONNECTED (to our home) and I text messg'd a pic to my daughter.. and I noticed that the H with the check mark then turned to the arrows while the photo was going through to her, which tells me that it was then using mobile network right? But why..and how, since it was off... Hmm.

Well i know picture messages cannot be sent over wifi they do use the data network. i never really paid attention to it when im wifi to notice if mine switches to the h with arrows when i have mobile data off but guess I'll have to try it.


But i do know that when i leave my house and forget i have mobile data off and then try the internet or email that I get the check Internet connection box and can't do anything until I turn it back on. (this happens to me alot as i always forget to turn it back on)
 
I wouldn't have noticed either except I was staring at my phone to see how it went through, if there was an error, etc.. since it was my first one with the new phone.
I noticed that the photo my kid sent back to me, was really tiny.. normally her photos were large on my previous phone(s).
