Data Use clocking up

khannr

Newbie
Hi,

I installed 3G Watchdog on my DHD as last month I got txt warnings from T-Mobile that I had exceeded my month 1Gb allowance. Now I'm not a heavy user by any means. All I tend to view are news sites and Facebook so I couldn't understand how I even got close to that limit.
So this month I thought I'd keep an eye on things using 3G Watchdog. From 1st Jan-25th Jan my data uage is already at 864 MB (640MB recieved and 220MB sent)! Unfortunately 3G Watchdog doesn't tell you where that has come from i.e. what sites are eating up the allowance, and T-Mobile can't tell me either. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can tell what's eating up all my allowance. I don't have any of the auto synch stuff like Friends Stream turned on and the only widgets I think I have on is the weather one which is set to update only every 12 hours.
The data usage figure also seems very high as I've been told by a friend with an iPhone that he's used approx 2.3 GB in 6 months and thats with heavy usage and downloading big apps.
Any help \ ideas would be gratefully appreciated

I hear that Facebook is one of the biggest culprits in using up data... also streaming programs like iPlayer or YouTube use a lot too. 1GB a month isn't much and its easy to go over that in a week for me.

It's far better to use WiFi in my opinion and I don't dare touch the mobile internet thingy that the contracts throw on you.

Are you able to access WiFi cause I really recommend it.

i would suggest using wifi mine is 3mb or so in most places for me (work and home)

stick it on and just charge the phone more often. what i do and no worries.

Whoa, that is a lot...

I mean I surf the net, on facebook etc, but never that much. I barely get through 5MB a day on mine.

Make sure all your sync is off, HTC Sync is a big culprit. Best thing to do is experiment. Disable some apps and see which one is causing the issue.

I had something like this before and it turned out to be astrid that was auto syncing all the time.

I had a weird day the other day when my phone used 80meg in one day. Crazy. I would make sure you haven't downloaded any dodgy apps that aren't reputable or full of feedback.

"Traffic Stats lite" will tell you which applications have used how much data, but in general, use WiFi whenever possible

So far this month (19 days in) I've used 137mb's of Mobile Data and 208mb's of WiFi

Thanks for the replies. sonesh's suggestion of using Traffic Status lite got to the root of the problem. An application called animated weather was running in the background and turned out it had used up 70md of data in just the last 3 days and that was with a 6 hour interval refresh rate! that's just ridiculous. Not sure apps should be allowed to eat into that much of your data usage without warning you. I've mentioned this 'feature' in my review of the the app in the Market.
Also noticed the game Reckless racing lite also used up about 40mb over the last 3 days even though in only played it once for about 15 mins. Obviously thats all the ads that must have been doing that.
Again, thanks for your help. Much appreciated.

Hi, 1GB is a massive amount of allowance. I do a lot of surfing and would struggle to get anywhere near that figure.
Normal viewing of Facebook/twitter or checking E-mails would not really dent your allowance unless you have Autosync&mobile internet permantly on(24/7)?
Also check Applications/running services and see if you have an App that is constantly eating data.

Have you done any downloading as part of your monthly allowance?

My advice is to do any MarketApp/software upadting using wifi and recommend getting a Power bar widget so you manually select when you want to set - Mob internet on - autosync on - for those Apps that require an internet feed and you'll also probably see a dramatic increase in battery performance.

I'd call up T-mobile again ask where the major chunk of your data is being used?

Hope this helps
