Help Data Use going crazy

Lurker
Last week, i got a text msg from my carrier (Virgin Mobile in Canada) that I had reached my data limit (1GB) - less than a week in to my billing period. I have never gone over 1GB - even when they gave me 2 months unlimited usage when I first got the phone! I checked the unbilled usage (which is about 2 hours behind the actually usage) and it was at about 280MB. Since it was about 1am, I turned off the phone and went to bed. The next morning, it showed that I was over the 1000MB ... I called Virgin who said they could only see the total usage, no details. I spent the rest of the day in a hospital waiting room and could barely receive a phone call or text message, let alone get online - yet that night I was over 1000MB in my pay-per-use data (so over 2GB of data use in about 36 hours). I have turned off the data on my phone and only turn it on for about two minutes a day to check the data usage and I have still managed to use another couple hundred MBs.

I have turned off the auto-snyc for all my apps. i don't stream anything - the occasional YouTube but probably less than once a month. i mainly check Facebook, twitter, read some news and google stuff on the go.

Prior to the phone going data-crazy, I had replaced the microSD card with a 16GB card to add some music to my phone (using Music WithMe) - which has been installed on the phone for four or five months now. The music wouldn't install to the SD card which I assume is a separate issue - could it be related?

I have had the phone since april or so and have been loving it ... until now. I miss being able to go online wherever or whenever I like. any ideas how to solve this? is there an app i can download and see where or what is using the data? (in real time? - i can't afford the pay-per-use until i figure it out. Virgin said they would credit it me if it was their fault but I don't want to end up paying a fortune if they won't or it is my fault somehow).

help!

I found that lunatic59 recommended Watchdog Task Manager Lite to someone in the Android apps forum. Anyone else use it? Figure it can't hurt at this point ...

Hopefully someone can make a suggestion for me because last night I added the Watchdog app and My Data manager. I left my phone connected to my home wi-fi and according to the apps, things looked normal. Nothing showed up on the Data Manager for the mobile usage and all the stuff you would expect on the wi-fi - yet this morning, it shows that i have over used another GB on my pay-per-use data. I just don't get it.

any suggestions??
please.
