date and timestamp on received sms

Can anybody explain to me why the dates and times I see on text messages are stamped with current time (i.e. time that message is downloaded/read) rather than the time actually sent....? Can't see the point in this.

Not much you can do with the stock app unless you root and mod the app.

You can however see the time sent if you use handcent.
