phone dies even when it has at least an 80% battery life and when i get the phone back on, the date and time reverts back to Jan 1st, 1999 @ about 4:05 pm instead of automatically updating itself with correct date and time. I have to manually input date and time. Could this problem mean my battery is going on the fritz or is it mechanical?

Do you have network provided date/time checked?
Otherwise this could be a hardware malfunction. The battery shouldn't have anything to do with this problem.
Do you still have insurance on the device?
