De-branding

Am i right to be a little concerned that in the video he's not even doing it on a Desire?....and i can't see any reference to the fabled "Gold card" everyone speaks of.

Hi

I am on Orange Desire, just used the unrevolked root last night How To: Root the HTC Desire (Unrevoked Method) | TheUnlockr and then flashed with this ROM [ROM] [15/11] Pre-rooted Stock Froyo (2.10.405.2) [Optional mods] - xda-developers .

Works like a charm, no more Orange rubbish and the whole process took me 20 minutes.

I just took my sim card out when I flashed the ROM.

Wireless hotspot working now too and a lot faster with great battery life.

I got my phone in September from Orange and locked to them.

The above ROM also contains a radio which works fine with no issues.

Unrevoked supports multiple handsets and the process itself is the same, however different drivers will be required.

If you simply want rid of the Orange branding, I'd say go with what Eddy is saying. You can't go wrong if you do as he recommends.

If you eventually find you have reasons to root other than branding issues, pop over to the rooting sub forum and we'll happily advise you - but at the moment, rooting would probably be overkill

Apparently the new FroYo radios don't SIM lock but I can't confirm this personally as I've always been unbranded since new

When you're creating the goldcard, do you leave it in your Desire or put the card directly into your desktop machine?

If you're using the MoDaCo GoldCard tool leave it in the Desire.

First you must have USB debugging mode ticked and on charge only.

After you have received the CID number and produced a goldcard.img, switch the Desire to 'Disk Drive' and follow the instructions to patch the MMC (which is refresh, load the goldcard.img, press the 'patch MMC' button)

I think you need to read up on ROMs a bit more before flashing if you don't know what a radio is...in a nutshell it's like drivers in Windows, it allows Android to talk to the hardware and is one of the most important parts of the system

I think you're right Ed. I'm very new to android and the framework it's based on. Basically I just wanted an easy to follow (idiot's guide) to removing the branding from my Desire. I'm not concerned so much with custom ROMs or getting too deeply into it. I'd be happy if i could just remove the nonsense that's on it and revert it back to a unbranded unit.

However. I spoke to a rather helpful guy in one of the Orange shops here in Cardiff earlier and he said they could remove and lot of the stuff for me there. I'll see if they can remove enough for me. if not, then I'll have to go down one of the routes mentioned above.

If you just want to debrand then it's a 10 minute job...follow post #21 (my post) up there and you good to go

Cheers Ed. I asked which of the above advice was best to follow for what I wanted and yours was the one pointed out for the job.
