Help Dead Galaxy Note - What to do?

Hi,

I put my Galaxy Note on to charge one night, and when I came down the next morning the phone was completely dead and I can't switch it on.

I've tried plugging it into my laptop after installing Keis, taking the battery, sim and SD card out and following the hard reset instructions from YouTube and nothing happens.

Does anyone have any ideas for what might be wrong and how I could possibly fix it? I've done lots of searches on Google, but can't find anything that matches this situation that helps.

Does anything happen on the screen when you plug in the USB charger cable? If not, then I think you need to consult your supplier or Samsung so that it can be repaired or replaced under warranty.

Nothing happens at all no matter what I do to it. It's totally dead.

My phone provider is sending me a replacement as I've only had it two weeks, but if there is a way I can repair it I would like to as my wife wants one too and it would be a cheaper way of getting one.

If it's beyond repair, then fair enough, there is nothing I can do about it.

Hmm, odd that your provider is letting you keep the old phone. I would have expected them to send it back to Samsung to have it repaired. Of course you can also do this. Since the Note is less than a year old Samsung should repair it free of charge. I would just make absolutely sure that your provider has transferred ownership to you before you do this (or at least they know that you want to get the phone repaired, preferably in writing), otherwise you would be committing fraud as far as I know (I am not a lawyer).

First post here - Hi everyone!

I have had a Note since Feb. Yesterday I hooked it up to a USB charger in car - although I wasn't 100% sure that the charger adapter was working. The phone died without a peep. After several attempts to turn it on again I realised the phone was starting up - but the screen is just completely unpowered. I can hear the Samsung twinkle sound as it boots - but the screen is "black screen of death" material.

I suggest KasaurusRex try rebooting it and see if he can hear that startup sound. May be the same as mine. I'm in the process of chasing up the warranty return.

Yes, I would be very surprised if the OP was allowed to keep the dead phone.

I've tried switching it on again and listening for sounds of life, but still nothing. It's like there is no battery in there at all. Completely dead.

As for returning the phone, I wasn't asked to send it back. If they want it then by all means I'll send it back.

My new phone has been dispatched, so I'll try the new battery in the old phone and see if that works. If that fails then I think I'll get in touch with Samsung directly.
 
I was going to ask if you fried your battery but I guess it doesn't matter if you are getting a new sgn with new battery. You will then be able to check the old sgn with the new battery. Replacing a battery is easier and cheaper than buying a new sgn (but you don't have to pay for the new sgn I guess.
 
Even if the battery was fried (very unlikely) connecting to USB power would have worked if it wasn't dead. Even if the phone has to go back, they usually ask you not to send the battery or charger, so keep those as spares.

Thanks for all the replies.

They did want the original back, but I kept the charger and headphones. I didn't think to keep the battery as a spare. Oh well, nevermind.

My new phone is working well and I'm alreadt downloading the ICS upgrade. Let's hope i don't start a new thread for this!

There is a big chance of the battery being fried if it was left on charge too long, e.g, overnight. It may not happen the first time but eventually you will fry the battery. Connecting via usb is not viable in this situation. The only way I could see to check the phone would be to try booting with a known good battery. A lot of stores would let you do this free of charge and you are also in the right place to buy a new battery if that is all that is wrong.
