Help Dead GPS

Gearu

Android Expert
At some point in this process, my GPS has been murdered:
Installed ADW Launcher
Made it how I wanted it (gps isn't touched)
Installed ADB Shell 3D launcher
Wiped data on ADW launcher and then uninstalled.

Now GPS marker doesn't appear in the status bar, only when I try to use an app that uses GPS, and they fail to get a lock.
It's kind of acting similar to having power savings switching it off when not in use, but it's basically non functional.
GPS Status app can only lock onto satellites with the help of network/data connection.

Fairly pissed as everything was fine before and it locked fast, now I have nothing, I tried installed ADW again and fooling with that but the GPS is plain dead.
Tried installing another config file but still no help.

Tried to work this through the touchwiz launcher but it's the same.

edit- Tried to flash LPQ modem with ROM Manager but I get 'failed to verify whole-file signature' and 'signature verification failed'.

Hi Gearu!

From my experience, ROM Manager doesn't play nicely with a lot of things these days. I have it installed as it works OK with CyanogenMod.

If you have CWM installed, I would recommend manually booting into CWM Recovery and using that to install your modem.

I'm on my second, brand new S2, and experiencing the same issue with the gps on both. Basically, I have no gps. I used to run a cydia'd iphone3g, even cracked it worked fine at 4 years old. My galaxy ace, fine as well...but the $300 S2, noooo. I've already spent hours and hours trying to find an answer online, and am hoping one of you fine gurus here might have an answer for me. I don't usually let much whip me, but this is giving me a headache.

Now, again, this is with brand new S2, nothing has been touched. This second one wouldn't even work when i picked it up. As usual the "techincian" (trained monkies make this guy look stupid), tries to bs exsuse me as to why it won't lock with gps. Too close to buildings, trees, anything he could pull from the excuse bag. Buildings or no, it simply doesn't function.

I'm reading that this could be modem related possibly? I am with a smaller carrier in central texas, so hopefully that won't matter (sans the fact they're beyond help). At any rate, as I said, I have NO gps whatsoever. No system icon, ever. No program can access gps, ever. I've tried the gps fix to re-download the config files, along with every other non-intrusive recommendation. At this point, rain on warranty, I just want a working gps, not too much to ask for imho (although the cell co tech did quite literally call me a pain in the ass, he's lucky he's not eating through a straw, lol).

Bottom line, two phones in a row, where gps will not show a system tray icon ever; no app is ever able to access gps services. Both this way out of the box with no mods or even ANY market downloads.

Please help before this thing gets put in a clay target launcher ;-) But what would i film THAT with, hehe....thanks in advance!

Have you tried taking it back to the store and getting them to make the gps work? Not right that it isn't working.

The only other thing I can think off is to try and clear data/cache of the gps/maps app or maybe do a factory reset.

You tried accessing google maps? Does it ask you to switch on GPS?

Ive tried all of the above, including returning and getting a replacement. Factory reset both, nothing. Any app that use gps services acknowledge if gps is off, and they seem to see its been activated, but can't use it. I've tried turning on gps, then starting the app, and vice versa. Reboot, pull the battery, etc...nothing sems to make any difference. Cache clear, re-download, same thing. Its literally like the gps is never really coming on fully to start with.

Thought it might help if everyone knew i'm on 4.0.3, LP6 base/kernal. If anyone has suggestions on a better prior version that will atleast let the gps work, or a great replacement in leu of stock, i'm open to suggestion.

Did it work under Gingerbread?

No way to know, both came out of the box with 4.0.3 :-/ I'm game to try a previous version, so long as i don't end up with an expensive brick. Knock wood, i've been flashing roms of all varieties and such for close to 20 years without killing one, maybe this will follow that line of luck. Thanks for atleast reading my post, this is driving me nuts.

Something i failed to add regarding the in store return on one already, the tech just simply couldnt wrap his head around me possibly getting two bad phones in a row. I keep trying to tell him there a re TONS of these having issues, if he'd take the time to read he'd see what i mean (google is our friend). In his eyes, it's somehow my fault the gps on my current phone didn't work out of the box. He just keeps trying to explain it away as building/tree/bird droppings/whatever interfering with reception. The prob really isn't with poor reception, it's with the gps not firing up to start with. One would think if it ever becomes active, it'd show up under battery use, right? As i have no way to confirm this, i'll have to rely on someone who has a working gps to let me know. Again, no icon, ever in the system tray. *ugh*

Another thought i've had is related to my carrier. It's a smaller setup, though they do cover a huge chunk of texas. Heres the thought: could it possibly have anything to do with something they setup in my phone, modem or otherwise? I haven't checked to see how my galaxy ace is setup (gps works fine on it), but i will look into it. I basically just wondered if any of that could be a possibility with alternate carriers that are going through the motions, but can't comprehend why..... Also, data wise, no complaints on their "3g+" setup as they call it. Typically i see 5-7MB/s+ as long as i'm attached to one of the new towers. Thanks again all

Just occurred to me. If you are in US, can you tell what version your phone is as well as the CSC and modem version. The reason I am asking is as far as I know, US version have no ICS yet. And if you are using US version and have ICS, its indicative it was flashed and if it was, might have been done wrongly.

Also, can kies detect your phone? Just a thought.

Cheers
