After that no matter what update HTC issues, the exploit will work as long as you can rollback the kernal. Am I missing something with my line of thinking?
Once the phone is rooted, HTC updates no longer apply. You turn OTA updates off, otherwise every OTA update would un-root the phone.

I'm aware of that. I was refering to new eris owners who apply the OTA updates and then decide to get root later.

Yeah, I consider "developer" to be equal to "programmer" too. I ask because one of the "developers" now listed has made posts only a month ago that make me wonder... :-)

LOL.....Speaking for myself, I only joined this site a month ago, but thats because I spend all my time on XDA and had never heard of this site before :)
Can never really judge knowledge by how many times someone has posted...or stuff like that...

Your example has arrived.:D

Just wanted to let everyone know that I am taking off on Vacation with my Fiancee to beautiful France tonight :)
So I wont be as active or able to update as thoroughly as I normally do.
I will still be checking in with the rest of the Dev Team via email, and if anything major happens will make sure that everyone is kept in the loop!

Thanks again for everyones amazin support and patience, it is truely and honor to be part of such an amazing community :)

Thanks again and see ya soon.

Eris Root Dev Team Spokesman/Spokeshole....lol.....

Thanks...coming from a "Premium User" that means a lot...LMAO
had to joke...lol

You are always going on Vacation man...I think you shouldn't be allowed to go on vacation until root has been achieved....lol jk but COME ON WE NEED 2.1 or ROOT ASAP because I want to have the full potential of the Droid with a better looking phone.

1) I wasn't referring to posts here, but over at XDA, in fact. 2) I wasn't referring to post count either. I was referring to the context of a comment/post they had made at XDA. And now they're a "developer". Unless I mixed someone up with someone else, let's just say, this person made incredible leaps and bounds in knowledge in less than a month !! :D

Heh, or it could be substantially harder ! :D

Don't read what I post to be negative either, please. I'm an optimist, but also a realist.

No not at all , it definetly could be harder but who knows lol.. I'm waiting for root either way unless the update comes out and it's over a month after and still no root I might just go for it. We shall see what the future holds.

Posting what's been tried and didn't work is okay. Someone posting "have you guys tried 'fill-in-the-blank'" is a bad idea, IMO. But who am I to say ?

No one suggesting these exploits has actually found them themselves. They're well documented in many security databases, people just look for exploits that are known for the base kernel that the Eris uses. I'm sure HTC went to the source to see what needed to be closed up, rather than waiting around to see what has been attempted by the root community.

I thought the exploit was only patched in MR2. So even the original kernal version for the eris is different then the tattoo?

We have always had kernel 2.6.27. The Tattoo is based upon kernel 2.6.29, which is why the exploit was available to them but not us. But the current photos floating around shows that our 2.1 update gives us a 2.6.29 kernel, which could mean root will work right after the update. Unfortunately, I've heard rumors that HTC has already patched this on the 2.1 update. :(

i just wana give a shout out to the devs and especially acidbath!

i'm a total broke ass so i can't promise that i'll be able to donate to the bounty. i don't know enough about linux hacking to be able to contribute anything either. that said i am ever grateful for your efforts.

Haven't posted a thread for a while, so I hope this info can be useful. I have been going through hell and high water with Verizon trying to get them to pay attention to the fact of my phone RANDOMLY re-booting. So finally today my fiancee goes into a corporate store and tells the manager what the problem is and how if it's not fixed that we would find another carrier. Had already been to one corporate store in which the female tech rep pretty much gave me the middle finger salute.

To make a long story short, I was talking on the phone to the tech rep. He said that he and his manager have the Eris and he has heard of this problem. So as I we talked, I told him that the Eris hasn't been rooted yet, so that couldn't be my problem.

This tech tells me that he has tried to root it too, and that he almost had it. He told me that it can't be done using the Window's OS. He was able to use the rom of the nexus one, which of course has 2.1. He told me that the only thing preventing him from accomplishing this, was the difference in the radio versions.

Not too familiar with Linux code, as most of my stuff was with winmo phones. Hopefully I'm not repeating info already known. Just my two little cents of help. Thanks to the Devs, and everyone putting in some positive feedback on the root project

Duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude....................I can't wait for eris to get rooted! But what about the htc incredible coming or the N1!? (n1 rooted)! Hell lets root them all!

can anyone make sense of the info I provided? Granted the different radio versions will cause conflict. However, would it be safe to say (or even feasible) that if an RUU is made from a dumped file (in this case the N1 2.1 Rom), and the someone retrieved the radio version of the Eris, will this help obtain root? ( Actually looking at it, sounds more like it will just provide a 2.1 update..lol)

From my old WinMo days, and the days of CrackBerry, it sounds like it should give the 2.1 update, but with a cooked ROM. Now, the only issue I would see with that is getting the ROM onto the phone without a root. Someone would also have to create a .exe or a .msi file for Windows users to install the ROM onto the device. Now, I know that isn't hard to do, but with all of the issues that the Eris is giving people to just root, I would be afraid that not being able to control the install could potentially do more harm then good. If there was a way to just use a CD bootable version of Linux, such as Knoppix, then it should, in theory, work...

But theory and practice are two completely different things...

I'm an electrical engineering masters student with a little bit of programming knowledge, and I wouldn't touch what these devs are doing with a 20 foot pole. Awesome job to them for what they have accomplished so far!!! There are many people that are just waiting for this to be cracked, and when it does, the whole world will open up for us Eris owners!!! AWESOME JOB GUYS!!!!
