You can make a bootable Ubuntu LiveCD if you can't (or don't want to) do away with your regular OS or even partition and dual boot.

well, this explains a lot. The code i've been banging my head against on the eris actually works on the tattoo, but the hole is *patched* on the eris. Sorry for not forwarding my code earlier to anyone with a tattoo -- i thought we were running the same kernel. The eris has its own patch, not the mainstream one. Oddly, the eris patch doesn't prevent attaching to the root process, but it prevents doing anything with it once attached.
I'm thrilled my shellcode got us into the tattoo, but darnit, i'm back to square one on the eris.
