they rooted the tattoo, thought it would work for eris, but although the same roms, that particular exploit was patched on eris

I just started reading from page 14 "we have root" I shit my self....then has i started to read more....FALSE ALARM....I sharted! WOW I thought that really just happened!!! We'll get there sooner or later! You devs are doing an outstanding job anyway you look at it!!! Thanks for the hard work!

Do you think it's possible that with each OTA update we receive, they are making tweaks that result in making it harder to root?

That actually makes a LOT of sense. MR2 was our last OTA and everyone complained because it seemed to fix just one issue that few people were having. I was having the prob so it was legit but they probably won't publish that they patched known exploits. Good reason to do such a seemingly small update on our part but much bigger for them.

I don't know much about rooting phones, but it just makes sense that if they keep changing our phone with each update, we would be like a dog chasing its own tail when trying to find an exploit.

Hey everybody!!! Look what I found!!!

Sorry everybody...Just thought this was funny!!!

Keep up the great work devs!

In theory, yes, they can fix various exploits. Guess what else they can do ? Introduce another one (or more). They'll NEVER fix every hole.

very true, they might keep fixing different exploits BUT they can never get them all. Our Dev team is hard at work, every trying to crack the code that is the Eris

I agree with this too...I don't know if there is a piece of software that can be made that doesn't have some type of exploit. I'd be willing to bet that out of the two that were found, there are many more that simply haven't been discovered. Like I've said before, Microsoft plugs many exploits almost every single week. Sometimes as many as 70 at one time! Our OS is slightly less complicated but there are exploits.

I want to be excited about root, but I'm not even sure I'll be able to do it, cuz I'm not very techy... :p Hopefully it won't be that difficult??

Yes, god yes if it is written much easier to follow I think and you can go at any pace you'd like. I'm guessing it will probably be just pushing some code through the ADB though.

I found a thread over at XDA explaining how to get root access for a particular phone. Sadly, the user has to use .... the command line ! People were asking for help because "it didn't work" (for them). I think that's where I saw someone ask about a "youtube guide". I will admit, I've been trying to jailbreak our iPod touches and I can find hundreds of DIFFERENT instructions so I did try YouTube so I could SEE the steps. Of course, the steps this guy showed didn't match any written steps I'd seen either !!

jailbreaking the iphone came along way now they have just a one click option to do it thanks to known hacker geohot but I think the rooting of our phone will require a little more work by the end user,so while I will be excited when we get root I'm not sure I will do it just depends on how hard/ chances of bricking your phone there is because I'm screwed without my little eris lol

Actually you are pretty right on with the patch..
in this case we had a good exploit, perfect arm shellcode and with bruteforce pushed it through, but it only works on the HTC Tattoo.
They were only with updates OTA/what not at
.26 and we are at .27...
So it would of worked for us on the .26, before last OTAs....but they had patched it :(
Lame right?
But we did gain a bunch of knowledge with this.
We also added 2 new Devs that are GREAT with ArmShellcode work...
We also just found yet another exploit and are working through that one this weekend :)

Also we got tons of Devs over in the HTC Tattoo forums that owe us ;)

And when the time comes, we will do Video/youtube tutorial and directions as well as Written instructions :

Hopefully HTC/Verizon won't push out another lame OTA update in the immediate future. All the hard work by the devs is much appreciated. Root will be a huge victory and a great personal achievement to whomever does it. There are so many Eris users (compared to other devices) that the work they're doing will impact so many.

I thought about the Tattoo users...what a nice surprise for them.
