Dear Android developers I don't like your auto-correction "feature"...

Rapphie

Lurker
When I type in a message supposed to say this :
"I have just sent them a message asking for a silver one. Might work."
I get this with auto correction :
"I have just sent theme a message as king fort a silver zone. Light work"
Now I know you want to help me but when I go to the supermarket to buy toilet paper I don't ask them to actually wipe my bottom as well but it seems to me that you would like to do this...

Ok seriously I have just bought a Google Nexus 4 - great phone, nice Android 4.2.2 etc. I have Android in English but the keyboard in French - most of my messages are in French but sometimes in English. The correction in French isn't all that brilliant but is less irritating.
I have searched to try and find how to switch this off but all the answers I have refer to other, slightly different versions of Android and don't quite answer the question.
All I want is the option marked : "How the *%

I've found something like that with the default ICS keyboard. Frequently when I typed the word "English", the auto-correct would substitute "rubbish". So instead of getting "I'm an English teacher.", the thing would give "I'm an rubbish teacher." :D I don't want my phone giving its opinions about my teaching abilities, and I don't want it doing bad grammar either. :p

This is on Chinese Androids bought in China. Normally I use Swype and the auto-correct on that seems to be much better for me. So I'd suggest trying an alternative keyboard, like Swype.

Well, as it turns out I have found an answer : I typed "auto-correct android" on google and the 1st link explains... Oh well, maybe it'll be useful for someone else.
I have also discovered Swiftkey which is pretty good and replaces the standard keyboard.

Settings/Language & keyboard ("input" on some handsets)

There should be a Settings option for the default keyboard that allows you to disable auto-correction, amongst other things.

edit: glad you found the solution. The above will save anyone else with a similar issue using Google. :)

you'll find this to be the solution for a lot of your problems:

"stock can be replaced"

almost anything that android is or does has alternates in the store. or on XDA, depends on what you're looking for. don't like the default SMS program? GoSMS, Handcent, or a host of others are out there waiting for you to try. having issues with the features of the stock camera? look for a new app.

it's fun, and once you find things that work, it's awesome. you can always go back if you don't like it.

I always have to manually tap the correction and miss iOS inserting it automatically myself. While Swiftkey has iOS's autocorrect for some reason it wont work in the forums forcing me to type super slow or use my iPad

Yep that's one of the awesome things about Android. We have so many alternatives.

Yes, I hate the new autocorrect, its almost as bad as using an Apple product. Unfortunately Apple sells so high up execs want to sell and therefore force copying of Apple, faults and all.
