Help Default Application Woes

Hello,
I'm interested in learning a bit more about how the Default Application settings work on a DroidX...I think I am seeing some of the nuances/ridiculousness of the OS and how it works.

I feel like for many filetypes I have chosen the application I want to be the default to handle the filetype literally dozens of times, without the OS remembering. (ie: .pdf [specifying Adobe Reader as default], following links to addresses [specifying Maps as default], etc)

Anyone help with this is greatly appreciated.

If you install a new app or update an old app that might be used to open a specific file type, the OS will prompt you for which application you want to use and you'll have to re-specify a default (if you want to).

For example, if an aftermarket browser is updated, it will prompt you when you select an address and you'll have to set Maps as the default again.

I don't know if there is a way to change this behavior.

I am aware of that necessity in design.

I haven't done either of those in the situations to which I am referring, however.
