Defragging android?

Hi there,

I have heard that linux does not need defragging as the EXT file system is not prone to fragmentation as NTFS does.

So, android is from linux, does it mean that it does not need defragging even if you frequently install and uninstall apps?

Also, how can you uninstall default apps that you don't use (like roadsync) without rooting the phone?

The process of defragging and file fragmentation is only relevant to mechanical spinning hard drives, where there is an actual physical R/W head moving around over the disk surface, reading/writing data. Android devices have solid state storage. Defragging is totally necessary with solid state storage. SSDs have zero access time, as there are no moving heads or spinning disks involved, so even if a file is fragmented on an SSD, the access time will be exactly the same.

BTW I have a Windows 7 laptop that has an SSD(Solid State Drive), formatted as NTFS. I never have to defrag it. In fact it's harmful to an SSD running a defrag program on it. Windows 7 is aware of SSDs and will not try to defrag them.

SSDs actually have a finite number of read/write cycles before they start to degrade, unlike electromechanical hard drives, this is why it's a very bad idea to try and defrag them. Linux has to be aware of SSDs as well, to avoid unnecessary swap partition writes, that could prematurely shorten the life of an SSD.

TRUST ME you need to get the app "android defrag pro", it cleaned up my phone and sorted it out, giving me some extra space and increasing the overall speed of my phone a lot. Great app.

I doubt anyone with a SSD would need defragging??

That's a legacy of the past and no longer relevant on SSD units!!

This app is HORRIBLE! DO NOT USE! It should be removed from the Play market! Android (or Linux) certainly needs no help 'organizing files' and never, ever needs defragging! I don't know what this app actually does - if anything - but it can't be good.

I don't even defrag on Windows. No problems here.

This thread inspired me to check my XP, which has never been defragged, over seven years. It reported that it still wasn’t necessary. Always wondered if it ever did any good anyway.

Yes, that app is an obvious trojan (it seems to have already been pulled from the market. err, Google Play Store). However, the AppBrain page for it is still up. They didn't even try to make the graphics look at all legitimate. Look at this...

First off, the phone memory and the SD Card have identical free space. Second, WTH are you supposed to be sharing and/or rating? And even though a good portion of the disk is "unmovable files" the end result is one seemless block.

I also love the part in the description "Fragmented files are the cause of 80% of your Android Mobile & Tablets performance degradation, slowing down and draining your battery."

Oh, and the only permissions are "Your Browser History" and "Internet Connection". Those are both vital for a defragmentation program, unlike say "Storage" and "system tools"

Google seems to be way ahead of you on this. As for what this app does, it seems to take your money, copies your browser history and send it off to God knows where. That is what this app does (and all it can do with those permissions).

LOL... I thought this post was a wind up until I read on and realised someone had actually rekeased an app.

It's solid state.. fragmentation isn't an issue.

In the HTC wfs menu under sd & phone storage there is an option to improve performance by defragmenting storage.

Why is this if its a ssd?
