Root defrost to gingerbread

rowlers

Android Enthusiast
Not been here for a while, but getting the flashing bug again!
So currently have defrost 6.1 with a vorkkernel. Fancy a go at go gingerbread. Probably gingervillain unless someone recommends something else!
So to refresh my memory: nandroid and Ti.
I'm guessing I need to wipe everything, twice!
Will a2sd work as soon as I start loading apps?
Anything else I may have forgotten?
Thanks

One wipe usually does the tricks unless you got something special going on with custom mtd's. GV seems a little last years turnips these days with Cyanogen becoming a veritable fashion icon.

I think the battery life on GV is superior to CM.

Many of teh senior members here left GV but not all for CM. We all kind of went different ways. Not necessarily for any particular reason other than a change. GV is a good starting point IMO.

Never really used GV but I'd have thought a bloater like Leedroid would be better; its full of apps to play with that a noob has never seen and thus is a good guide to decide what to delete or re-install when you move on.

Yeh should have said dont want to go back to sense. What's this redux like?
The only feature of defrost I'd really miss is the toggles in the status bar.

For what it's worth, SUroot went from DF to GV without even a wipe. Now that was about 20 GV releases ago, so no promises it will work now, but if you nandroid first there's nothing lost by trying - though a clean install is less likely to have little niggles.

I mainly moved because I fancied using a smaller ROM that was compatible with small cache partitions. Since then GV has been updated to meet that second requirement (and CM only meets the first if you strip a lot of stuff out). I expect I'll try it again at some point.

Almost all AOSP ROMs seem to have a notification power widget these days, though some have more features - CM/GV one also gives you short cut to settings menus if you long press the toggles.

yeah but it was literally as you said, 20 versions ago (0.6) so I wouldnt recommend that now...Frameworks have probably changed massively since then..

The same is with Oxygen.

Think I'm going to go for Oxygen..
Why am I nervous???
Recap, I have Nandroid and Ti. So I'm covered for a restore.
Anything else I need to backup to restore to where I am now?
SIM card remove before flash? [Orange].
Cheers

* Make sure you have backup for your other data, like SMS, Calendar, Contacts, etc. MyBackupPro Root (free) should take care of that.

* Make sure your SD card has ext3 partition for a2sd+ to work. 1GB recommended.

* If you are S-OFF, flash Bravo Oxygen r2 table. This will give you 333MB internal storage for your apps.

* Before flashing the new ROM, do the 3 wipes from Recovery.

* Titanium Backup - do not restore system apps. Only the user apps and its data.

Good luck. :)

all done! nice and smooth so far, just a few bits and bobs to restore, few apps missing etc.. but went well.

now which kernel?

spot on, i'll stick with default for now.
Quadrant is not as fast thou as defrost was :(!
I know its not a real test, but...

No, GB roms quadrants arent as fast due to 3D graphics optimisations. However, every day use of the GB roms is faster

yeh it does seem that way so far, it seems fairly slick, even compared to the defrost which was quick anyways...
working nicely so far, certainly no reason to go back to defrost anyway!

thanks chaps
