Help Delete old messages not working

My Evo is a year old and I have over 2000 text messages in one conversation. The "Delete old messages" setting does not work. And I have that annoying "Low on space" notification that won't go away even after uninstalling apps. If they could just fix the "Delete old messages" feature then everything would be fine.

Android v2.3.3

P.S.
I just installed Handcent app and it does NOT have any option to auto delete old text messages that I can see.

P.P.S.
I just installed GO SMS Pro, and it too does NOT have any option for auto deleting old text messages. WTF is going on? Is there a law or something preventing apps from doing this?

Iv been finding the same - the one in default messenger doesnt work, and Go SMS did use to have it then it got removed in an update (without me noticing)

the best Iv found so far are both by JADS LTD;
"Delete Old Messages" - free
only deletes message after a certain age and have to run manually
"Message Cleanup" - costs
more features incl threads over a certain amount and auto cleanup (https://market.android.com/developer?pub=JADS+Limited)

I'd rather have a limit on the amount of messages in a thread though than base it on age

*p.s. Im using a Nexus S but this issue still stands strong!

this is a really ANNOYING thing about the EVO. takes hours, days even, to delete a large amount of texts. if it even works at all. drives me insane. yet the phone will reset sporadically and erase all the text in a matter of seconds. makes no sense.
