Help Delete Preinstalled Apps - After Root!

I rooted because I was fed up with the preinstalled Orange bloatware apps as I need the space! I used unrevoked and I have full root access i.e. I have the superuser app and I have been able to access the system partition and even managed to delete apk files from the system apps directory.

However, despite trying all the suggestions i found on these forums and elsewhere; Root Explorer, System App Remover and Titanium backup, no matter how many times I remove the apps in question, within a short time, the phone reboots and the apps are back again!

Please note that I am only trying to remove the stupid games etc which Orange stuff the ROM with not anything significant.

I really dont fancy flashing a new ROM as I cant be bothered setting up my phone again from scratch, so any advice somebody can give would be REALLY apreciated!!

Ok well,

1) removing these apps from the system partition will not give you more space. Your space is on the data partition, which these apps are not taking up

2) Those apps you listed run in android so only devices that are S-off can do this (Which you havent done yet)

Also, thanks a million for your rooting guide! It's theone I used to guide me through the process.

Shame I missed reading the very last part of it as I now see it answers my question!!

Many of the claims I read about rooting stated that one could simply delete system apps right after rooting. It seems however that that is not always the case!

I shall try using abd as per your suggestion.

On non-htc devices that may be the case. HTC put a security flag in radio's NVRAM so when android is running, this flag prevents anything being removed from /system.

This can be disabled by going through s-off. Then you can simply remove apps.

Thanks for your detailed advice, but there's something I dont get.

If the space available for self installed programs is a fixed partition, then even reflashing with a standard HTC rom which doesnt have the Orange bloatware wont give me more space. The only way I can ever gain extra space for programs is by setting the phone up to install to the SD card, correct? Thats not what I understood!

Sorry, havong google it, indeed you are correct. In that case, rooting to me seems highly overrated. I really couldn't care about the bloatware being on my phone other than the fact that that I thought that it takes up extra space which I sorely need. I've never seen anything in rooting guides until to day which told me that they do not take up useable space.

I now don't get the big deal to reflash to a different ROM if it wont get me extra space anyway.

Unless you can once again point me in the direction of something which sings the praises of alternative ROMS!! ;-)

Yes I am correct

Well you can partition your sd card and get a Rom with a2sd. This will give you more space (link in Sig)

Also if you get s-off, you can flash alternative hboot to change the internal partitions, making /system smaller and giving more to /data

There are other benefits apart from space.

Custom roms are faster and more battery efficient. Theme-able.

Root access gives more control over android.

These benefits are not overrated but it does take knowing and understanding them to appreciate it and that takes time

As much detail as people put into the various guides available, none of them tell the copmplete picture and I thank you for your guiding hand.

One final question if I may. I have back up my present phone setup using the backup in Rom Manger. Have I understoof things right in that even if I flash a new ROM, I will be able to easily revert back to my present setup if I dont like the new one? The reason I have confusion over this, is that people are always asking for the Orange ruu. If their main backup is a good one, why the need for an official version?

You can return to exactly how it is now. Orange Rom, all your data etc.

However this is rooted do you return to the rom rooted, as it is now.

RUUs are for returning completely to stock. Not only do they return Rom to unrooted stock, but also replaces custom recovery with original HTC recovery. This is generally for returning the phone to HTC for warranty repair.

I recommend not using Rom manager. Using proper recovery is better.

Take a backup using recovery manually to be safe. Steps are in rooting faq if needed
