Deleting Unwanted Apps?

Hey everyone:
A question has come up on a site I host about deleting unwanted apps on Android devices. Any suggestions as to how it can be done? Does it delete the app and free up memory or is it still there in a virtual sense?

Do you mean the pre-installed "system apps" that cant be uninstalled in the normal way?

With some of the force-fed Google apps, I save space by uninstalling their updates, then ignoring their nagging reminders at the Play Store.
