Dell XPS

Does anyone own one or know anyone that does? I'm just looking for a few reassurances that it's a legit purchase. I've never owned a laptop before for myself. I've purchased them as gifts for others using my tech background but other than that I don't know how reliable Dell is.
 
The XPS is pretty nice. My friend has one and he does like it. If you are looking for good quality laptops also look at Sager, Falcon-Northwest, Maingear, and CyberPower.
 
In terms of laptops Dell is as good as anything else. Some will adore Dell others will complain.The truth is always in the middle, its at least above average. In general you pay a tad more for the Dell name than the same specs with another vendor though
 
The XPS in top tier as far as dell computers are concerned but i'm always wary about laptops. An extended warranty is probably a good idea for real
 
The owner of the company where I work bought an XPS laptop. And I can tell you that while I was setting it up, it seemed very well built and I also know that he has not had any problems with. I believe he's had it for close to a year now. I personally have had an XPS desktop that I've been using for a couple of years now and love it. The only problem I've had with it was hard drive going bad about 3 years in.

Ding ding ding! I am looking to get the XPS laptops. I ended up purchasing the laptop yesterday (XPS 15). After doing some searching around, it turns out it was really the best bang for my buck. I also extended the warranty for 2 years so hopefully I have no issues. I tend to take very good care of my electronics so I'm hoping I'll have some good luck on my side.

Specs:
- Core i7-740QM Processor
- 1080p R+GB LED monitor
- 6GB RAM
- NVIDIA GeForce GT 435M (2GB VRAM)
- Blu-Ray drive
- 750GB 7200 RPM HDD
- Backlit keyboard

Thats a bad mofo right there!! And usually if something is gonna mess up on a laptop it will be within the first 2 years in my experience. Thats granted to take good care of it, there are plenty who don't.

I couldn't agree more. A buddy of mine happened to have a coupon code for $30 so I used that to buy the Swiss Army Legacy backpack as well.
 
I bought a top of the line one with the best of everything when it was released 3 years ago... Now, however, it is still a nice machine, but the GPU is waaaay outdated... With the way technology is evolving (and especially at this point in time), a performance laptop is not something I would consider.

Luckily for me, I don't plan on using it for much gaming. It's more or less something to assist me in having the ability to work on the go. I could have gone with something a bit more inexpensive but the fact of the matter is that I wouldn't have gotten my money's worth. I might play a game or two on it here or there but no hardcore gaming on it. I have a 360 for that. The hardware on this thing should last me quite some time.
 
my wife's laptop is an XPS and its pretty nice. We had some issues with it right from the start and Dell replaced the parts in house (in-house warranty FTW) and its been good since then. Dell's warranty dept has really gotten better over the last couple of years.

In the grand scheme of things i'm just not a laptop fan. Its so easy to tinker/upgrade a desktop(just took 2 early 2000 dell's and re-did the works to get windows 7 on them... $200, lol)
With a laptop you got, hdd, ram, disk drive, maybe the wireless card.... thats it pretty much.

All desktops for me! LOL
My girls laptop has a weird problem that i can pretty much guarantee is not in the realm of things i can fix and that ticks me off!! That just doesn't happen with a desktop

I was going to build a new desktop for myself but then I realized that it would be a huge inconvenience. That's when I thought of the laptop. Not to mention, I already have a fully functioning monster desktop PC.
 
i have a dell xps 420 desktop that i maxed out after i got, it is a pretty badass machine, never had a problem with it and it gets put through its paces...and i pretty much never turn it off either...it runs for months at a time.
 
As mentioned above, the XPS do run very hot, so don't be surprised if it shuts off in the middle of a graphically intensive game... I think part of this is due to the fact that the majority of the heat is routed to the bottom vent, but the vent is.. well.. on the bottom... Unless you have a cooling station, the thing will get very very hot...

I don't plan on playing many games on it if any at all. Do those cooling stations/pads actually work?

If you get a good one it does... The thing that makes them the most useful is the fact that it elevates the laptop, thus allowing air to actually flow from the bottom--provided the vent is on the bottom--instead of being blocked by the surface it sits on. The fact that air flows to it also, is just a bonus.

I know we are talking dell but I love how my cooling exhaust port on my Toshiba is on tho side. It blows a lot of hot air out. My wife asked why don't my laptop have that. I said because your laptop is a HP.

A friend is looking to getting a xps and build out is $2700. I will see how his does him. I don't really like dell as their cd-rom drives are shit in their desktop and a few friends had theirs keyboard crap out. Other than the cdrom going out twice. I replaced it with a lite-on. And no more problem.

I just have to upgrade the ram on my Toshiba. Think I have 4 gig now. Want to try for 16. At least 8 for now.
