Desire Advice...

Hi guys,
just had a few questions about desire, hope you can advise!

First off, my old brick phone has practically died! so need a new one! i'm a student and skint so cant afford

I would suspect they are new phones and yes they might be clearing stock as the Desire si being replaced this year.

Not sure on the warranty, used to only be 1year manufacturers warranty but I heard that by EU law there has to be a 3 year warranty - so not sure.

Would I recommend a Desire?
Yes and no.
It's an excellent phone that has some limitations that are being fixed with the upcoming new phones this year.
The Desire has very limited internal memory, which is "fixable" but it requires rooting and installing a custom ROM, which then voids your warranty and means you no longer get or can use over the air updates.
But if you don't mind getting into the guts of the software (so to speak) and the warranty doesn't worry you then it's fairly easy to do.

If you are starting a new 24month contract you might want to consider the newer phones to avoid having to root and flash but I doubt you'll get them for as good a deal as the Desire is at the mo.
Had I known how bad the internal memory was I'd have gone for a Desire S or one of the other newer phones, but I decided to hell with the warranty I need more memory so flashed a custom ROM.

One final thought.
Please make sure you have a data package - smartphones really do need it.
It may cost you a few extra quid a month but it'll be cheaper than carrier charges if your phone chews through data online without any package.
my iPhone was on PAYG and that could chew through

sorry if this seems stupid, but im new to smartphones!

can you not just use a sd memory card then to store things? or does the phone not allow that and you have to save to internal memory?

thanks again
Andy

For an example I have had my Desire for about a month and used 143MB of data.
Most of my use is on wifi but I don't bother disable syncing when I'm on mobile data (I just let it do it's thing)
Then I don't go crazy with the internet when I'm out and about either.

If you use 3G watchdog that will keep an eye on your mobile data and even sound alarms and warnings when you get within certain limits.

I bought mine from Mobiles.co.uk last April. They are are a division of the carphone warehouse so in theory they are a reputable company. I'm paying

so do you think 250mb per month for out and about stuff would be ok! then just turn it off when i get warnings,,, then nip into mcdonalds! haha

With Android 2.2 there is a data2SD option also there is a data2sd app that does all the apps that can at once.
But lots of apps can't be moved and they tend to leave things behind in memory when they are moved.
If you download apps you are very likely to run out of memory without even trying and that internal memory goes in no time.
You can't move widgets either or they break.

There's no way round it really apart from:
Keep deleting cache, uninstalling unwanted apps and hope for the best.
Or
Rooting your phone, partitioning your SD card and flashing a ROM that supports apps2sd+

One isn't very helpful longterm the other voids your warranty but frees up the phone and turns it into a different device (in a good way!)

I've never gone aboive 250mb yet. As long as you only use the 3g connection for email, social networking and standard web browsing you should be fine. If you want to stream music or watch YouTube clips then I would advise looking at 500mb packages.

The only way you'll find out is to install a tracker app and see how much data you use. I would say it isn't, but then i'm spoilt on the old 3gb limit with T-Mobile. I used mainly WiFi and work from home, so my data was only about 150mb.

It all depends how you use it.
If you are streaming music and videos, emailing, using social networks all day on data it'll probably go quite fast.
but if you just use the data connection for automatic syncing you shouldn't use too much data.

If your carrier allows you to add or bolt-on new packages then you could always add more data at a later date at a bit of extra expense if you find your data package is limiting your use of the phone.

But all smartphones are the same and the Desire is no heavier on data than any other.

Like I said, I might send a couple of mails a day, maybe a few minutes browsing (no streaming though), use navigate on car trips and let my phone sync every hour.

Your useage may well differ.

The other point to mention is you may find that your battery is the limiting factor of how much data you can consume over 3G rather than the data limit ;)

Yes and no. The SD card gets disconnected when you hook-up to USB (as either a flash drive or in order to sync addresses etc.) and because of this applications need to know that the memory may go away and act accordingly.

Apps can be written so that the majority of their data is on SD and a bare-bones app is in phone memory but a lot of the older ones weren't and (since this ability only came in in Android 2.2 - Froyo) they take-up precious phone memory.

Because of this a lot of people seem to run out of internal memory. I have around 50 apps installed and I've not run-out (I've got about 35MB a.t.m). I'm also happy to delete a load of unused apps if I get any closer to full and need to install something new. Some people have had problems with email and contacts taking-up large chunks of their phone memory, there are fixes for this. Others seem to want to install every app on the planet (even if they're never going to use them).

Basically you have to be aware of the device's limitations in order to get the most out of it but there's not that much to know in order to make it work brilliantly.

Then there's rooting and ROMing the phone - it is possible to partition the SD card so it does appear exactly like phone memory, just not on stock Android ROMs. I haven't bothered with this as I'm happy with it as is but many people do (and there's a lot of help available on here and elsewhere).

Yes I bought a smartphone expecting to have this world of unlimited internet and apps to play with then was quite surprised when I hit a wall with the memory limitation.
I can't delete stuff I "might" need, just the same with my PC - I just add a new harddrive hehe ;)

You do have an unlimited world available - you just have to sample it a bit at a time (in the same way you do with your PC, you cannot buy infinite disks). I mean, it's not as if the Desire isn't constantly connected to the net with several market apps available to download apps as you need them...

No true but I can buy bigger discs for the PC.

On the point of phones, I was just surprised how quickly I ran out of memory, and to be honest I did uninstall what wasn't needed and tried to do general housekeeping the same as any PC.
After trying a couple of launchers and a variation of widgets for each as well as well as what I would consider a normal array of apps that most people have on their phones I started to struggle with space.
The flash 10.2 update was a killer then I realised that I was on the limit and updates were going to finish off the space I had what choices did I have apart from not update things like flash ever.

There must be a reason all newer phones come with a lot more internal memory, or they wouldn't bother with the extra cost, HTC realised there was a basic design flaw with the Desire and have fixed it in all later phones.

I think we Desire owners are pretty happy with the phone, especially after rooting it.
However, we are talking about a phone that is more than a year old. You can get a better phones out there and the price shouldn't be much different.

If I were, you, I would consider SE Neo or Desire S.

Items must be "as described" so if they were refurbished they would have to tell you this prior to you purchasing it.

Have a good look and see if it's mentioned. If in doubt, phone/email them first and make a note of who you spoke to.

FYI I got my Desire from them shortly after the Desire was released over here (within the week I think) and it was free on a

can you elaborate on this? my email was taking up over 100mb and everyone keeps saying "clear the data" when that button is not highlighted!!!

what is the fix?? please...

This is the fix:
Settings - Applications - Manage Applications - Email - Clear Data.
Settings - Applications - Manage Applications - Gmail - Clear Data.

If the button is grey, then you don't have any data there.

so the stock email app was taking up 100mb of space and the data button was greyed out...hmmm.....

so where is this 100mb of data then??

thanks guys for all your advice,
GF found out about my plans! and gave me a telling off! cos we really cant afford it! so, gonna use my old phone on payandgo until i get more hours at work, or a propper job!!!

cheers anyway, will keep looking at the deals, maybe for my Bday get some cash together then!
