Help Desire - Bluetooth will not turn on

I have a 6 month old unbranded Desire running 2.2 with latest upodates that works fine (aside from the normal issues and glitches), but a seldom talked about issue seems to be affecting my phone, and I am damned if I can find anyone who has found a solution - including factory reset.

Problem essentially is that I turn on the Bluetooth (either from the widget or from the Settings/Wireless & Networks page directly, and in either case it says "Turning on" and then after a few seconds reverts to a state whereby it is waiting to be turned on.

I only sporadically used bluetooth in the past, so I know it used to work....and sometimes it still does, maybe after an airplane mode or a reboot....just not reliably. Yesterday it took 20 restarts/airplane mode/turn on/turn off bluetooth attempts to get it to enable, and this morning when I turned on...its gone again.

When its on its no problem, it connects both to my Audi A6, or my Plantronics Discovery....its just getting the software stack to turn the hardware on reliably that seems to be the problem.

One final observation - if I turn on airplane mode from the settings page I see bluetooth and WIFI turn on off with BT greyed out. If from the same settings page I then turn airplane mode off, I see WIFI turn on AND I see BT turn on also (with the message "Turning on...", but it still fails to enable.

Is this hardware or software? Can it be hardware if it does sometimes come on?
