Desire HD - First Android - Top 10 Widgets You could not live without? GOGO

Dalmation

Lurker
Sorry as this is probably repetative.

I got my DHD two days ago but with work have not had much time to play with it.

I loaded a movie on it but it was super choppy, guess i'll have to resize it.

Good free program for that? Settings?

Must have widgets? Launcher Pro seems like a must.

I can research all the different weather etc apps, but any MAIN apps that I must have.

Top 10 apps/widgets you love on your DHD? GOGO

I have 14 days to fall inlove with this phone, although I doubt it'll take that long. Any advice with my first droid is appreciated.

I'm not a huge tech buff but I can figure anything out with the right instructions. Thanks

I'd miss HTC's agenda and FriendStream widgets. The former for being comprehensive and scrollable, the latter for getting all my Flickr, Facebook and Twitter stuff in one place.

Hey, welcome to the world of Android, first let me congratulate you on selecting an awesome phone (DHD according to me)

Well there are heaps of good apps you can get and enjoy, a few I have right now are
(I am still in to my 4th week of owning the phone)

01 – Tap Tap app – Grate app to minimize the use of the Power Button
02 – Skype (trying to figure it out yet)
03 – Angry Bird – not an app, but a great game.
04 – Quick Notes – kind of a note pad
05 – Astro file manager

That’s my top 5...

Always remember to read the reviews well and do a bit of googling before installing any app.

____________
Thank you! For the “Thanks” you’re going to give me, if I have helped in any way.

amazon kindle - good for books
3g watchdog - keep an eye on data use
angry birds - great free game
astro - file browser
birthdayinfo - gd reminder for birthdays
callend vibrate - you will son work out why its usefull
copilot - great satnav
dolphin browser - i prefer it to the strock browser
fotmob - good football score site
mort player - good for audio books but maybe not the best choice for music
pes2011 - great game
pure calender - good calender widget
quickdesk - not sure to describe it, try it and see if you like it
rocket bunnies - great free game
realcalc - great calculator
rock player - plays avi files
screeblpro - keeps your screen turned on when the phones in your hand
tank hero - another great free game
tunein radio - radio over the net

In no particular order:

  1. GO SMS (way better than stock app)
  2. TuneIn Radio
  3. Tiger GBA and Advance Wars
  4. Barcode Scanner
  5. Goggles
  6. Vignette
  7. PewPew
  8. Astro File Manager
  9. N64oid and Mario 64
  10. Spotify

All those mentioned are good, and I'd like to add PowerAmp Pro - so much better than the stock music player. Add to playlist, enqueue albums, if one album finishes the next just starts, resumes playing on headphone connect. Awesome app and it remains the only one I've paid for.

Widgetsoid is good for creating your own widgets.
Gun Bros is good for a laugh (shooter game)
Cardiotrainer is a good fitness training program.
g-strings tuner is a must if you have a guitar
Bartender is great for cocktails!
Evernote if you're at all forgetfull!

I could go on...

Great phone, by the way, you won't need 14 days to decide you've made the tight choice, but I would recommend you read the (many!) battery threads.

For me, I like (in no particular order, some are widgets, some are apps):

- Smooth Calendar, to display on my homescreen my next three upcoming entries.
- GO SMS, very nice sms app. I did use handcent but prefer gosms, bit nicer looking.
- BBC News, great for news headlines (I'm in the UK).
- Quick Settings, great way to quickly access common settings.
- ColourNote, brilliant little note app.
- Stocks, quick way to check stock values.
- hotukdeals droid, easy way to check deals within hotukdeals.
- eBay, easy way to check ebay stuff.
- Miren Browser, my favourite web browser.
- Picasa Tool, app to access your picasa web photo albums.
- ES File Explorer, great file manager.
- Winamp, music player.
- XE, excellent currency converter.
- Friendstream.
- weather.
- agenda.
- iplayer (BBC iplayer, UK).
- Aldiko, prefered ebook reader (since I have a lot of .epub books, some other apps won't read this format)

Green Power,
Dropbox,
Goggles,
TweetDeck.
Photoshop Express,
Astrid Tasks,
SiMi Folder,
Widget Locker (because i like it),
SwitchPro Widget (wont be as useful when the gingerbread update comes),
and for some reason also Pulse.

I'm looking for a good Music Video Player. I have a lot of 3-4min Videos on my phone and I'd like to play one after the other shuffled. Which Player can do this?

Standard Player just plays a single file.
QQPlayer can't shuffle.

Any suggestions?

I have to give props to Widgetsoid. It's amazing how customizable it is. You can put all your toggles on the pulldown. Agenda Widget is amazing, too, if you're dependant on your calendar. ACCleaner sped everything up after my caches got too big. Tasker is great - it turns on my wifi and my lights (via remote control switch), my bluetooth when I open a music program, shuts it off when I turn off my headset, silences my phone during meetings, dims my screen at night and rotates my screen when I view pictures (I dislike auto rotate for anything else). There's a bit of a learning curve for Tasker, but it's easy if you're used to programming.

I love Doggcatcher for podcasting, it downloads everything right to your phone so you need never go near iTunes again all the rest of your days.

Hi at the risk of sounding daft its my 1st phone that does more then text or ring but whats the diff between apps and widgets and where do i get them from.

Apps are applications or programs that run on your phone just like applications that run on your computer. Widgets are (mostly) interactive panels or buttons always visible on your homescreen(s).

Installed on your phone is an app called "Market" and this is your gateway to the world of Android applications (there are others but you'll find them in time, I'm sure). You can head to the market and browse the available apps for your phone.

If you long press on an empty spot on a home screen you'll bring up the personalize menu - once here hit Widget and then Browse all HTC widgets. Play around. Try out the different widgets and see what you like or need etc.

I would suggest very strongly that you also configure your synch settings. As a new user, inexperienced with smartphones you may find that the default settings will a) drain your battery too fast and b)incur unwanted data charges (although this is somewhat dependent on your data plan).

And before you stumble across the ravings of a complete moron whilst here on the forums know that you should not waste your time conditioning your battery and more importantly do not install a task killing application.

Welcome to wonderful world of Android.
