Desire HD GPS Fixed

Just thought Id register and post on how I managed to sort my GPS out.

Got my HD before Xmas and it worked fine. Even after the 2.2.1 update the GPS was working fine, up until about a week ago, when for no apparent reason, it just started to fail to get a fix. When driving, it would occasionally catch my location at random intervals from a couple of times a minute, to sometimes not even once on a 1 hr journey.

Now I know many peoples failed with the 2.2.1 update and a factory reset didnt fix the problem. But with mine working after the update, thought there was a good chance it would sort it out. I tried the usual of taking battery out etc and using GPS status to reset the Assisted thingy, but it didnt work. So I did a reset last night, which was nowhere near as bad as I expected, as after the sync, all my apps started to just appear and gradually it all returned to normal, all I had to do was sort my widgets out and readd all the apps to my screens.

Went outside last night and immediately GPS status found 8 sats, and got its first fix in about 30 seconds. Just been out now and Copilot is finding 7 or 8 sats and getting a fix within seconds.

Im happy again! :-)

Good to see, fcum.

I've noticed that when it seems inaccurate, two things bring it back to pin-point accuracy and pretty quickly: 1. if around wifi, turn it on, 2. just do a reboot.

The little blue arrow will always end up less than 20 feet or so of my location as tested.

Do you have the problem too?

A reboot never worked for me. Maps would just sit there, and give me an error saying something like my location was unavailable, and to try again later.

Just got back in from a few journeys in the car, and I got a fix within a few seconds every time. So fingers crossed, its now permanently fixed.

What I dont understand, is what caused it in the first place, as I dont want to break it again.

I have not seen much beyond GPS being off by about 100 meters two or three times over the past several months.

That's too far for me, so I rebooted following cache clearing and it zeroed in.

Here are 2 things that helped me to get a really fast fix :

First of all change your gps.conf file in /system/etc to the settings for your country! They might already be correct, but it is worth to check it out because this will ABSOLUTELY delay your fix a lot...

Second : get gps-status! With this program you can download the needed A-gps data which will also give you a much faster fix. I use this program about every 5 days to download the newest A-gps data (the newer your A-gps data, the faster your fix will be!)

Hopefully this helps... it sure did for me!

Cheers

Hmmm. Well after 3 days of my GPS working faultlessly, it failed again half way home from work tonight. Just locked the fix and never regained it. It cant be hardware as it is fixed by a master reset, but then I havent altered anything on the software side to cause it to fail. Im lost now.

I've got a problem where my phone apparently locks, but it's usually 800m to 1.3k off, i've tried restarting the phone with wifi, data, gps on/off and it does this in all my apps that need to pin point where I am, with the obvious big probs being locations and maps any ideas?

Hmm so this is why my nav n go is now useless!

Can someone give some more step by step instructions on how to sort this out?

Thanks
Tom

Hi,

I am also having problems with GPS, never really noticed it before but not used that much.

Anyway, what I find is I may have a good fix, driving for 10 minutes all fine, then it looses GPS Fix. Google navigator or NDrive both fail to find satelites, however if I go to the app GPS Test it shows that I can "see" 8-10 satelites, accuracy is 0.0 which I think means No Fix. normally say 10-30 feet etc.

So it seems to be tracking the Sat's OK but not fixing?

Any idea's,

I've been having similar issues for the past month now where my phone will only pick up 2-4 satellites but wont fix them or when im driving it losses a fix completely

After much internet research i came across a fix which so far has completely sorted the problem, after altering a setting last night my phone now finds 8-9 sats within 30secs and that’s indoors!

To make the change go into settings - wireless & networks - mobile networks - access point names - select the top option as it will be different depending on network, mine says orange internet - scroll down to the bottom and where it says APN type, it should say default - add to the end of this ,supl to now it reads default, supl – then restart your phone open gps status and you should get a quick lock on

im not that technical when it comes to phones but apparently this speeds up the satellite fixing and as i said it has worked for me
