Desire IS getting GB!

Cool. HTC will trim sense a bit to make it fit. I'm unbranded, so should get this when it comes out. Hope this restricts the carriers from adding too much themselves - so it gets around everybody as soon as possible.

I hope you are right - the other way it can go is that the operators won't release it until they can squeeze their junk in.

It's more than Sense being trimmed, I just noticed this tweet from HTC earlier today:

To make upgrade to Gingerbread, we will cut select apps. Updates starting next week.

I've asked them if they are cutting existing apps or Gingerbread specific ones, but I'm not expecting a reply.

To be honest, this whole 'we can't do it because of X, now we can do it by removing Y' thing has annoyed me, so I'll probably change phones anyway. The awful internal app storage is starting to cause me problems and I don't even use a lot of apps. It's a shame, because the Desire is a good phone and an unbranded HTC one doesn't have much bloat on it, compared to other manufacturers and then branded handsets. I might even seek out a Nexus S.

Cheers for the link. Now it makes sense.

No problem anytime. Honestly im sicked and tired of htc and their crap. First they say we will get gb and then no and now they say yes again. Im never buying another htc product again. Next phone is either samsung galaxy 2 or iphone 5. Also im gonna install a custom rom that doesnt have sense now. Currently using teppics pre rooted stock froyo.

Although I'm not a fan of Sense UI, I appreciate that HTC is bringing out GB for Desire. :)

When I heard the news GB not coming to my Desire.

I rooted it immediately, because OTA update was only thing preventing me from doing so. I was so habitual to Sense UI.

However after rooting and getting custom ROM, one of the biggest problem (WE all know Internal Memory is too lame in Desire) with the phone is resolved now.

Even after installing 15 - 25 Apps I have about 200 MB free Space, which is great, NO longer I worry about it.

Anyway Somebody plzz tell me If I can get the OTA Update or not, as I have already made Nandroid Full System Backup and I am able to restore my Phone to earlier times

Though I have not tested it after I enabled A2SD. Will there be any problem.

Wait, if you're rooted why do you care about an official 2.3 release? Yeah, it's silly that they're back in forth, but it's understandable why given the memory issues the device has.

As stated by LECTER, you will not be able to update OTA. Even better, disable OTA update in Settings or else it might cause a lot of troubles.

There should not be any problem restoring your nandroid backup, even after having second partition on SD card. Keep a copy of the backup on PC.

Well once 2.3 is released the custom rom that Im using and others like it (pre rooted stock froyo) will be updated to 2.3. They should have made sure that 2.3 with sense would have fit before they said they could do it. Any idiot can tell you there isnt much space on the desire. Its either yes or no. Not yes, no, yes. Its not rocket science.

Just to be clear though: the nandroid restores your phone to the state it was in when you made the backup, which means rooted. So the OTA is not an option even if you restore to the nandroid backup.

If you want the OTA then you'd have to unroot, by running an RUU, before you could accept it. But there's not much point, since it won't bring anything you can't have right now, and even if it did it would be available as a rooted ROM the next day :)

Right, I am getting the overheating problem:mad::mad::mad:, wont recognise my home wifi, but will at work, so when not on wifi as soon as I try a few minutes on the web in crashes, though is absolutely FINE when on wifi. Will it get better or worse with gingerbread..... I have an original Desire on Vodafone.:confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused:

This is all well and good. But before I consider taking the plunge I need to know and understand:
1) What exactly are the enhancements in GB over FroYo (irrespective of Sense)? And are they really worth getting?
2) How much space will GB require and will it be worth sacrificing that space for the benefits above?

I have an unbranded unrooted Desire (I'm not interested in rooting because I'm not that technically minded and don't want the hassle of "you're on your own mate" if I strike problems) that still has 14 mths to go before I'm eligible for a phone upgrade. I currently have something around 53 MB left of ROM which is slowly but surely being whittled down with every month or even week that passes, even though I diligently clear out my app caches 2 or 3 times a week.

What aggravates me is that the advent of apps capable of being moved to the SD that we thought would come with FroYo really hasn't happened and I'm left with a small handful of apps that take up huge chunks of ROM and won't move to SD. Google Maps, for example, weighs in at over 10 MB. Facebook (the standard one, but the same applies for FB for HTC Sense) won't move to SD and is nearly 9 MB on my phone.

So before I get GB I'm going to want to be 110% sure that I won't end up with a turkey in my hands for the next 14 mths.

GB brings bunch of small changes that together make it very much worthwhile to have.
For example, it will allow you to move more things to SD card, so this should help you with the internal storage problem.
Another good thing is that GB will manage system resources better, thus giving the phone longer battery life.

GB ROM is as large as Froyo. It is HTC that is putting bunch of things on it as part of the Sense UI.

.

Have you tried clearing data on these? This will free up a large chunk of space, and all you need to do is log back in.

I'd love to have 54MB free! normally about the 20MB mark, which often dips down to the warning level. Keeping fingers crossed for some sort of improvement with GB (Rather not root as well).

Yes I have, but it only takes a day or two and all the space you saved is filled up with data again...

This is the main problem with the Facebook app. I've just stopped using it all together now, I just look at it either on Seesmic or on the web browser. It's not as slick but it's better than losing all that memory.

There's plenty of space for GB and sense. They just need to get rid of Teeter and a few (live) wallpapers etc. There's so much junk in there that should be just made available in the market.
