Help Desire Overheating/Rebooting

Mayfair

Lurker
Hello to you all,

Over the past months my HTC Desire has been overheating ALOT, during minimal usage (less than 5mins) phone call, browsing, searching app market, playing games etc....the heat from base area (buttons area, mic )on phone increases fast, then bam... off it goes to trying to reboot several times before it freezes and i am left with removing the battery to wait a few minutes for the base area to cool, before replacing battery to start it up again.

This has been happening to many times and at my wits end with it, i have all up to date service updates, i have no idea what it is that is causing it. I am on contract with O2 and can't upgrade or change until May. Was really hoping to keep this phone to and go with giffgaff, not looking good now

I know if i take the phone back to O2 for return to there service center, i will get the automated reply, we are sorry to say that we found that your phone has been dropped or got wet and has damaged "________" this will cost you

Was that a 2 year contract, i.e. did you buy it when it first came out? A fair number of early devices had this. It's a known fault, and the only solution is a motherboard replacement.

Hi and thanks Hadron for your response, yes the phone is on a 2yr contract with O2 from May 2010. There had been no problems from i received it then until recent months, one thing i might add is that overheating is greatly accelerated when phone is on charge and using it.

Yes it is a known fault and your phone is guaranteed for two years by HTC. Get in touch with HTC. I have exactly the same problem, I contacted HTC on Wednesday and they arranged for UPS to collect it from me today at work. They email you a label to print off and full details of what do do.

Turn around time is quoted as 7 days but many people have reported receiving theirs back in 3 days, they replace the motherboard.

If they do find the fault is caused by water damage or abuse they will charge you

Hi and thanks wavemeister, i was thinking that i was under some obligation to get O2 to repair, i didn't think that i could return directly to HTC. I will get on to it and look up there returns procedure details.

Really lifted my spirits now that i can return my beloved HTC for some TLC, and not rely on O2.

Thank you.

An update, my phone was collected Friday morning and delivered back this morning :D mainbord was been replaced and so far after several hours of playing with it no problems.

I'd like to add my story on this topic...

I bought a brand new unlocked/vanilla HTC Desire here in the UK in January 2011 and had no problems for a full year at least. Then around February/March this year I noticed that the Desire would occasionally reboot if I was using the Google Navigation app - I could use it for perhaps 5-10 minutes, and then it might sometimes reboot (but not always).

But gradually it got worse, until about 3 weeks ago when it would always reboot within 2-3 minutes of starting the the Google Navigation app. And at one point it was so bad that after it had rebooted it would actually reboot again before I'd even had the chance to restart the app, which indicated to me that it was not a bug in the app that was causing the reboot.

I then took some time to do some thorough testing, including trying different versions of the Google Navigation app and also hard factory resets of the phone and ensuring the latest offical Android 2.2 OS was installed. (I won't go into any more detail, but I've worked in IT for more than 2 decades so I know what I'm doing when it comes to testing things! ;) )

The result was that no matter what I tried, the Desire still kept rebooting soon after starting the Google Navigation app, indicating that the problem was not linked to a particular version of the app or the Android OS. And after a quick internet search I found this thread, and also a few others on the Vodafone UK forum, all talking about this problem and suggesting an overheating problem with the mainboard which affects some Desire handsets.

I subsequently contacted HTC UK via their online chat and they raised a repair ticket and arranged for a courier to pick up my Desire. It was returned to me within a week, but they had done nothing except re-install the latest Android OS which I had already installed anyway. So unsurprisingly the Desire still rebooted as soon as I ran Google Navigation  So I immediately raised another repair ticket with HTC UK and had the Desire collected again. Once again it was returned within a week, and this time they had replaced the mainboard.

And in the 4 days since I've had it back I have run Google Navigation a number of times, and so far it hasn't rebooted itself ...let's hope it continues to work without any problems!! ;)

I must say that I was disappointed that HTC UK wasted a week by only re-installing the OS the first time, but on the other hand I'm pleased that my Desire now appears to be working, and since it was still within the 2-year warranty period I haven't been charged for the repair :)

The moral of this story is, if your Desire develops this particular problem, don't be afraid to keep hassling HTC until they fix it properly! ;)

Si
