Help Desire Recovery Message Error - Unrooted

My stock desire locked up last night and wouldn't get past the HTC logo.
This morning, I tried to use recovery mode, (as suggested from doing a forum search) but I'm now getting the following error message:

E:Can't open/cache/recovery/command

I can't seem to find advice for a non-rooted phone when I do a search.

Removing the battery allows me to re-enter the recovery mode, but none of the other options garner me any success either.

Has been great until yesterday, and of course the warranty has just expired - 15 months old.

Any suggestions from the gurus out there? TIA

I am none too sure about this problem, but will give you my 2 cents anyway. Use or discard as you wish ;)

If you are not worried about the warranty, you might want to try going s-off using the revolutionary method as described in the all about rooting sticky in all things root.

Then you could fastboot flash a custom recovery like amonra 2.0.1 or clockworkmod 2.5.0.7. With a working recovery you will be able to wipe everything and flash a custom rom, or a RUU to revert to complete stock.

Another option, if you are on Froyo right now, might be to try running the RUU update to Gingerbread found on HTC:s official site.

If you go the s-off/rooting way, read the faqs and guides on this site and stick to them. They are the best! ...And no ROM manager!

Thanks for the reply - I was delayed without internet since my initial post. Needed to get the phone up and running (it's now my hotspot), so I ended up trashing all the user info and, yes, annoyingly, started from scratch again.

I'll have a look at rooting now, but all the info seems to be aimed at PC users, and I'm on a Mac.

Thanks again - I'm off to search all the info I can about rooting my Desire. :)

As I understand mac, not using one myself, you don't need to worry about drivers as you would on Windows. They are there already! That is about half of your worries gone...
