Root Desire Roms discussion

I would like to start a topic on the various Roms for desire.
A special interest would be light weight rom with sd ext.
Now I am using runnymede007 rom. It is a nice one with sense 3.5 and sd ext. It has a good stability, just problem with this product is, that it gets overcrowded in memory once playing bigger games and becomes slow or sometime freezes absolutely and big games crash on it.

The lightest ROMs are AOSP-based (Android Open Source Project), i.e. no Sense. Redux, Oxygen (original or MildWild mod) are pretty small, CM7 or GingerVillain a bit bigger. All of these have sd-ext (the lightest, dGB, does not).

Be running dGB for many months and has been flawless, will probably make the move to JB soon as its much quicker than ICS.

Jellybean? On the Desire? Fully operational? I'm sceptical..:p

The build by Nikez on xda is pretty solid, haven't run any recent builds but I think the only major issue atm is the camera. Earlier builds I had were quick as GB and pretty bug free.

So, if i get Redux rom, it will have sd ext and it will install and configure itself, right?

hi,
i think roms need the apps to ext part script running after flasing them - might be wrong but think that is the case

for me as i dont use that many apps (about 60) i went the custom hboot root - i normally have around 100mb free with this - more if using dGB - this is with cm7r2 hboot - currently on miui xj and that is push 130mb free :) cool

cheers

Yes. It isn't the DarkTremor script, so no commands to type to set it up (which also means no options, you just get what the script gives you).

If you want it to move dalvik to SD there is a patch you have to flash after the ROM - a search of the Redux thread at XDA should locate that.

I will try it out. And probably will have to stick with open source Roms to fulfill my needs. That is a little annoying, because I love sense. But my poor desire is running on the last juice..
Now just need to get a hold on HTC Desire hd logic board, repair my HD and be kicking it for extra time :-)

But hey, people, come with all the Roms you use and discuss a little more :-)

Well for the last year I've stuck solidly with dGB - yes, it really is a year! :) OK, I've once or twice flashed Redux 2 (late 2011), spent a few days with MildWild Oxygen, and very briefly experimented with Sandvold's ICS, but I doubt that adds to a fortnight in total.

To be fair, the MildWild ROM was good (can't remember which version I last used), and I do have a soft spot for Redux 2 with its fancy notification power control. Both solid ROMs. Didn't use ICS long enough to give a thorough review - it was a bit less responsive, and I decided I couldn't be bothered with the effort it would take to set all my stuff up on it.

Prior to that in 2011 I'd used GingerVillain, various CM7s, Miui XJ, with shorter spells on Oxygen & Redux. My trend was towards lighter and lighter stuff, and I usually edited the ROMs before flashing to make them smaller (apart from Miui, which I didn't edit very much as I was less familiar with what was in it). All of these worked fine, Redux was the smallest and fastest of these, Oxygen also very good. Miui is different, and was a bit slower than the others. I found CM7 fine, but it requires more setting up (google apps and a2sd are both add-ons), and also I had usually removed 1/3 of the ROM before flashing so haven't so much experience of the full fat version. Have never run CM7.2, as moved off it before that came out.

Since I use a 3rd party launcher, and usually did a bit of UOT theming, the first order look and feel of these ROMs was pretty similar to me - some differences in menus or icon themes, but nothing much (Miui menus were completely different, but even then I used my normal launcher). So responsiveness and stability were the main things I would comare.

hi,

i generally find the aosp roms are solid but very similar - so i always uot theme em to make them look nicer - i got my latest zm ox looking pretty sweet :)

hence why (in the remaining months of my desire contract as it struggles on...) im trying out miui xj again - im really liking it as it is totall different and much more cohesive than just uoting a rom - seems to run well too - no issues so far

cheers

I'm pleasently surprised! I just had a look on the XDA page for this rom and, generally speaking, it has had a lot of work to getting it functioning without too many issues on the Desire. I guess I'm impressed that people are still putting the time into the Desire.

There are JB ROMs popping up all over at XDA at the moment, I'm curious to try the ParanoidAndroid port. All in all I am impressed with what is still being developed for our Desire but I do feel some of the devs are more into proving that ICS and now JB can be made to work but then development seems to stop. Probably because ICS and JB were relatively close together.

My Missus is running dGB ;)

My missus will probably be having my old desire and i will most likely put dgb on that for her! She wants an easy no problem android experience (unlike her wildfireS) which on orange is shocking! So dgb will be the way to go! No ext to set up, easy peasy!
