Help Desire SD Memory Card(s) problem

Hi I'm a bit of a newbie and am trying to find out how to connect to my Desire through wifi on the pc, my win 7 wont find it and I,ve seen something about discovery mode and wps. Pls help even if it is blindingly obvious.

This is somewhat off topic. You need to create a new topic in the Desire forum, give it a clear title, e.g., "How to connect Desire to my PC via wifi" and then cross your fingers. Good luck!

This problem is not only with the desire. With a stable hero on supplied 2 gig card I upgraded to san disc 4 gig sdhc card. I then have experienced most of the problems mentioned above.
A few points which may be useful-

The data was not lost if I ignored the request to reformat. No photos lost.

Unmount, remove cover ,reinsert card is quick way to get going again. ( but ill try the re-mount widget mentioned in thread).

I have exchanged first 4 gig card that showed symptom with no difference (sorry sandisk) .

So if this is an android code bug it is common to 1.4 and 2.1 and maybe 4gig cards.

I once shut down laptop before unmounting card from pc but I did this on 2 gig card as well without issue.

I'm facing the same issue with my supplied 4GB card. I had raised it with HTC. I think they are aware of the issue, but they don't have a solution as of now. The guy had initially suggested deactivating the backup application, which I had already done. Here is the exact second reply they gave me:

Hello again Kaushal We've seen this issue reported for a couple of Desires and if these steps didn't solve your issue I was wondering if you'd be willing to have your device sent in to our repair centre for some testing, this way we could get to the bottom of this issue. Let me know if you'd be interested in this and also in that case what your phone number is and I'd arrange for someone to contact you further. Best regards, Dennis M HTC

I am not to sure about sending my Desire away for this testing as I don't know how much time it would take. So, I haven't yet gone ahead with this. Plus, as we know it is not easy to reproduce this issue. Sometimes it happens twice a day. And at times it doesn't happen for 2-3 days.

I too have had similar issues but I unchecked my back up option and it so far hasn't occurred. How often does the Desire conduct a back up?

It would be nice to have the security of having a back up created though!

Like you all, I have pretty much the same problem - intermittent disappearance of the SD card. When the problem occurs, if I go to Settings -> SD & Phone Storage it says I have an SD card of 0 bytes w/ 0 bytes free. I assume everyone else gets the same thing? Rebooting fixes it, but it will pop up again sooner or later - might be a couple of hours, might be a few days.
Incidentally my phone was fine for about 2 weeks before the first time this happened - anybody else have that same experience?
Have tried everything I could find in Google (reformatted card with the phone, disabled automatic backup, using SD Mount, etc) to no avail. The (slight) majority of anecdotal evidence indicates that maybe the SD card itself is somehow faulty, although not sure how this can be causing the intermittent flaky behavior I'm experiencing - maybe a bad sector (or whatever the SD equivalent is) combined with an inability of Android to cope with it? Just grasping at straws here.
What's really bugging me is that nobody seems to have arrived at an answer of "this is definitely the cause of the problem". I have no idea what to do - take my phone to the store and complain? And say what? I'm willing to go buy my own (bigger!) SD card if it'll fix the issues, but it looks like some other folks already tried that and continued to have problems.
So, for anyone who has had this problem and managed to resolve it, could you let us know how you did it? If you had this problem but now think your case might have been exceptional (i.e. you had an obviously faulty SD card) then let us know that, too - every bit of data helps :)

Thanks,
--Nate

I reported in post #8 the problems I was having with a 16gb card. I have now got a 32gb SanDisk, and like you with your card, aimansmith, the Desire doesn't see it from time to time. Rebooting sorts it temporarily.

I really think this is a Desire problem, which HTC needs to resolve.

I have also had similar problems - unfortunately I have found no solution - but wanted to share my problems

Problem: Programs are unable to see files on the SD Card:
Read problems:
Photo's show a broken SD card image,
Music skips on as it cannot read file (sometimes showing the message unable to play this kind of file or something to that effect)
PDF viewer cannot find any files
Write problems:
The camera as it was unable to take a photo as it could not save the file to the card....

When: it does appear to be after charging (or related to the morning as I charge over night). It also took a few weeks to manifest itself
It could be because of a program I have downloaded, such as astro - however I have been careful to only install recommended programs

Work-around: turning it on and off does seem to work, I have also sometimes tried to take the card out and put it back in again for a longer solutions; however turning it on and off again is usually good enough. BUT it is getting a bit annoying now.

I have tried the unmount SD card in the settings (instead of turning off and on) however could not see a way to 'remount' it?

I bought my phone from the cpw so should be unrelated to the network - and will try them to see if they will replace the handset. however can't help feeling that this may be more of a software fault?
It is the supplied card with quite a bit on it but does have a couple hundred mb left free......

Got my Desire a week ago.
I have exactly the same symptoms... + it doesn't "recognize" large parts of my music collection, etc...
32GB non-branded SD card.
Maybe it should be formated in FAT mode rather than FAT32 ? Can this be done?
Have a look here:
HTC Desire — problems writing to SD Card — #HTC | The technical side

It must be an HTC problem rather than a problem with dozens of various SD cards...

Following the above described problem, my 4GB supplied card died eventually. It stopped being recognized everywhere. I reported it to both CPW and HTC. CPW said they can't help as it's out of their 28 days period. HTC, on the other hand, promptly sent a replacement. I am right now looking at the old sandisk 4GB class 2 which had died. HTC has sent a new samsung one. Not sure how long would it last. I just hope it's not one of the apps installed which is creating this issue. Fingers crossed for the new card. People with higher capacity & more expensive cards should be more careful as the amount of data at stack would be much higher.

Following my earlier message

I have bought a new memory card (8Gb) - problem came back
I returned the phone, via the cpw, to HTC. HTC 'supposedly' replaced the memory card. However I think this was more a gung ho approach to not actually diagnosing the problem.
That took a month.
I have since also seen the problem return again. I have now called up the cpw to look into it...
The problem continues...

I started following this thread some time ago when I started experiencing these same issues with my HTC Desire with the SanDisk 4Gb SD card it shipped with. I swapped it out for a Transcend 8 GB Class 6 microSDHC card which I have now been using for about a month without any problems.

Usually, restarting the phone works for me, and I don't mind doing so until there's a fixed diagnose. However, an app that simulates the restart would be nice.

Yep - restart seems to have solved it for now but I won't be fannying about with that for long. There doesn't seem to be a definitive answer as to what the problem is??

I am having this problem too. restarting the phone doesnt do anything for me. I think it's because the phone is crap.
I've had more trouble with this "Desire" in the 2 months or so that i've had it than i have had with any other phone i've ever owned... SD damaged, hangs, force closing, crashes.... now i really try to avoid any app that doesnt come with it thinking it may be app related, but it still corrupts. Today and two days ago. It's pretty sickening tbh
It does it with the card in the box and with a Kingston 16GB sdhc card which i thought might solve the problem.

Does anyone have a card that works reliably? make? size? i think buying one that people are having luck with is the last thing i will try before throwing the "desire" out of the F?&%

Had my desire 3 weeks now, connected, it to the works pc to transfer my shift pattern went to view it for the second time and it told me it was corrupt! I formatted SD card re-transferred data and so far its still working .....

Most people don't have anywhere near as many issues. I haven't had one major issue since I got it. So it makes sense that either you have a faulty handset, or you're doing something wrong. Have you tried calling/emailing HTC or the seller you bought the phone from about it and seeing what they say?

yes, but i'm still waiting for something other than the automated response.
i dont do that much with it; phone, email, read news, small amount of browsing, watching movies when travelling and occasionally checking traffic if im driving near the M25 with Gmaps. not much point taking pictures because i wont have them for long. it's not filled with apps or mods or anything.

I have an HTC desire with the same issue. Bought it about 2 months ago. Started intermittently getting errors reading the SD card, the usual ones. auto backup cannot be completed. Blank SD card inserted. Cannot save photos because SD card is not mounted. I have searched on google and various forums and every thread I find is pretty much like this one. I am using a 16GB Sandisk microSD. I cant really be bothered putting the original back in because I need more space than that to do what I want to do with the phone. I am reluctant to take the phone back under warranty because it doesn't appear that they would be able to do much more than replace the SD card.

I have noticed that when my phone is under high use, the bottom section of the phone can get quite hot. Not the battery, but the section of phone where the SIM and microSD card are. I have no proof, but my theory is that the issue has something to do with changes of temperature in the phone, which isn't affecting the SIM card, but is affecting the contacts between the phone and the microSD card. Maybe there is some design flaw. It's so hard to predict or replicate even if I did change SD cards and it didnt occur for a week I woudln't be convinced that it was all ok.

I'll just add my "me too" to this thread. I've my Desire for several months now and only started seeing this problem in the last few weeks. I'm still using the supplied 4GB SD card. One thing I'd like to add to this discussion is that for the last 2 weeks I was on vacation in France, so I was roaming off my home network and not using a data connection (only Wifi at the place I stayed) and I saw the problem nearly everyday and I would have to reboot the phone. I've been back home for 5 days now and had the problem for the first time today.

Not sure this adds much to the debate but mine was doing this every day for the first week I got the phone.

So, over 2 weeks ago I took the SD card out and cleaned it (by clean it I mean I wiped it on my t-shirt) and I haven't had a problem since. I deliberately access my photos and the camera every day to test it and *touchwood* it's been absolutely fine ever since.

It's the 4GB card that came with the phone - I doubt the 'clean' did anything but it seems that just taking the card out and putting it back in can make a difference. Hope it holds out til I get a 16GB card when no doubt the whole nonsense will start again :D

32GB non-branded SD card.
Maybe it should be formated in FAT mode rather than FAT32 ? Can this be done?

No, FAT32 can only format a maximum space of 32GB through Windows (I actually think the desire struggles to do this itself). Fat 16 is about 2-4GB so that's not going to work.

I got the Desire, and the same problems with the memorycard stops being able to be written to, only be able to read. I've tried 2 x 4GB and 1 x 8GB, same problems on they all. Only thing that works is restart the phone to be able to write to it again. Hope there will be a fix for it.

Does this look like there's some dodgy hardware in the desire?

I've had my desire for a day and the SD card is constantly removing itself. I've tried formatting/unmounting/removing/re-inserting, but nothing helps. I've ordered an 8gb sd to see if it has the same problem, if so it's going back cause it pretty much renders the phone useless!
