Help Desire takes >5 mins to shut down

For the first time in ages my shut down was sub 1 minute, I didn't mess with the SD card or anything just made sure my wifi etc was off then killed all apps with ATK.

I'm hoping this is going to keep working for me.

same here. mine took very long to shut down too.

it always happen.

i think its normal, nothing major. just have to wait longer, although it might be a bit annoying.
 
My daughter bought herself a Desire in may. It has never been able to shut down - not even on the first day she had it, before she had installed any apps.
Regarding all the posts on this subject I do believe there is a bug in the OS, so an update is warmly welcome...

I've had this problem too, and I've just re-installed Advanced Task Manager, and I'm gonna attempt killing some apps and unmounting the card before shutting down.
 
Never been able to shut my desire down despite using atk to kill everything, just tried unmounting the SD card and it turned off in < 2 mins. Still not great but better than pulling the back off.
 
Prior to Windows 7 (or was it Vista), Windows was very often rubbish at shutting down if some process wasn't playing ball. No doubt after lots of users complained that their PC never shut down properly, MS appear to have now made the shutdown process much more aggressive and my Win7 PC *always* shuts down pretty quickly.

IMHO, Android should take a similar approach. If the shutdown is taking too long, Android should kill all processes, regardless of whether or not they are playing ball. As someone mentioned, he unsuccessfully tried to turn his phone off when on a plane and another person suffered grief when attending a funeral. You shouldn't have to monitor the phone like a zombie in circumstances like those and have to pull the battery as a last resort. Off should work and be done with it. Within a minute, tops.
 
Orange branded desire. Using a 5 or 6 apps. Tried using task manager without any effect.Tried unmounting SD card without any effect.
Tried swithcing Wi-fi or data off and it seems quicker than before but still quite long....circa 8 minutes.

Before it was as long as 30mins!
 
Any news on this? Today my desire took over 60mins to shut down. After periodically checking it for an hour I just left it to do its thing. There was plenty of battery left when I turned it back on, so it had apparently shut down properly at some point, not just died from low battery. I've tried everything suggested but it still sometimes takes ages to shut down. Some times it only takes a few minutes, making it hard to determine whether a particular fix worked.
 
Mine took 45 minutes to turn off yesterday. That was just turning it off in the state it was in at the time.

Today I tried powering down but unmounting the SD card first, and it took 10 mins.

Just now, I killed all apps with AdvTaskKiller, disabled wifi (didn't have bluetooth or gps on) and unmounted the SD card. Powered off instantly.

Then I tried it again, but this time leaving wifi on and not dismounting the SD card. All I did was kill all unnecessary tasks and itpowered of instantly.

So, unmounting the SD card doesn't make a difference in some instances.
Disabling WiFi doesn't make a difference.
Killing apps doesn't make a difference.

The one thing I did change between it taking 45 mins and powering down instantly is to free up a lot of internal storage. The day after it took 45 mins, I got a 'low memory' warning. I had 6mb remaining. After clearing some caches and deleting unnecessary apps, I got it up to 68mb and now it powers off instantly. Don't know if that made a difference somewhere?
 
Today I got the Android 2.2 upgrade OTA. I've been playing around with it for some time this afternoon and also tried shutting it down a couple of times. Every time it has shut down in 5-10 seconds, instead of 10 to 60 minutes like it used to take with Android 2.1. Not sure if it's just because it's a fresh install of the OS, but I hope it will continue to shut down this quickly.

It's not often that turn my phone off, but when I do, I need it to shut down more or less instantly. If I needed to turn it off 50 minutes later, I would have waited 50 minutes before turning it off...
 
Yes, after its update my desire shuts down in about 10 seconds as compared to about 5 minutes actually think this is the best thing about froyo :-)

In retrospect do most feel that froyo could have done with more testing.
 
Well, whatever it was, HTC seem to have fixed it in their Android 2.2 OTA update. Since getting the update, I've shut down my phone now and then just to check, and the longest it took was about 15 seconds, after I had used it heavily for several days without shutting off.

So, no need to use app killers, unmount the SD card, disable backup etc. Just make sure you get the latest update.

Mine takes about 15 seconds to shut down now as apposed to pulling the battery :cool:

My phone took 45 minutes to shut down this morning. This is when I had only 4 processes running. I do not think that is normal at all...
 
Before reading this thread, I thought my Desire has problems shutting down, so I take out the battery everytime I waited longer than 1-2 minutes.
I just try waiting longer...ok...it really takes me around 10 minutes to power off...I guess I will not take my battery out next time. :)
