Help Desire takes >5 mins to shut down

Yeah I use Astrid as a task list. If I kill it, via Settings>Applications>Running Services then my phone shuts down normally.
The poster above who was having problems doesn't appear to be using Astrid, or in fact any apps that I am using.
It could be that there is a wider issue with the kernel not killing apps that force themselves to stay alive in the background so as to not get killed when the phone is on as part of the memory management.

I was being brief because I was using my desire to write that last post.
 
I had the same issue. I had Advanced Task Killer running. I killed this software once (using Advanced Task Killer) and shutdown is now back to 5 seconds. Even with Advanced Task killer running.... No idea what happened, but now it is working.

I've had the same problem. Left it ovenight and found it still shutting down the next morning.

Also - more worryingly - had to go to a funeral on Friday, turned phone off as I entered church, then realised it wasn't shutting down. No time to dump it in the car, and stressful time hoping it wouldn't ring right in the middle of the service.

Anyway, enough of that. I found that exe888 on the vodafone forum has this suggestion (HTC Desire - My phone takes 20 minutes to power off is this normal. - Vodafone eForum)

"I had the same problem with powerdown. Regardless of Task Killer use, the problem was fixed on mine by disabling the automatic backup of the phone settings to the SD card. (Menu>Settings>Privacy>Backup my data settings(uncheck)) "

This seems to have solved my problem. Hope this helps others. It seems to me that there still may be a core bug in the OS, though.

Oh pooh. Just tried shutting down, and ended up having to remove battery - so above hasn't worked for me.

Have just tried unmounting the SD card before shutting down, and this has resulted in a sub 10-second shutdown!

However, it seems that there are several solutions which have worked for some, but not for others. Still think it's a core OS problem. Hopefully (as others have said), as this seems to be a common problem, its profile is getting higher and may be addressed - though I'm not holding my breath!

Thanks jlavery, this worked like you said, unmounting the SD card.

However it's still not exactly an elegant solution, hopefully there's a fix for this soon.
 
turned phone off about 11am, still shutting down at 3pm (eventually shut down as I poked it abit).

I think it happened afater I installed another app so wonder if it is related to amount of phone memory used perhaps dumping to sd card on shutdown, which is unmounted too early? (since uninstalling that app did not help)

Warning to pulling out the battery, I am worried that this may have left some corupt files on my phone memory as it looks like I lost about 10-20MB. Also I had to reinstall a couple of apps to get them to connect to the internet again.
 
When my desire was new it only took about a minute to shutdown but recently after having installed some aps (I have about 10), it can take up to 10 to 15 mins.

Whats going on.
 
Mine did this the other day. I restarted a few hours later and it was instant.

Is regular power downs the answer?

I still think its app based. Sometimes my Desire took a while to shut down. I make sure that any rouge apps are closed using Advanced Task Killer. The only ones I have running are my 3G Usage Monitor and the Task Killer. Shuts down fine.
 
I have the same problem ... the only way I can quickly shut down is if I kill all apps first. Nothing else suggested here worked for me.

The shutdown works fine if I just started the phone, so it must be something related to the apps or something going wrong in the OS after some usage.
 
Hey guys! Consider this a big, fat 'me too!' on the topic of lengthy desire shutdown problems.

Even though I check to find task killer has nothing left to kill aforehand, I still find, on occasion, that my desire can take up to five maybe even ten minutes to shut itself down.

I'm just throwing this out there as a possible cause, but do any of you experiencing the problem have a gameloft game installed which has been downloaded from their service?

Failing that, my suspicions turn toward the erratic and occasionally problematic usb disk drive functionality...

I just had to do this and it shut down in seconds. Previously tried to kill the apps first but that didn't work.
 
I have also had problems shutting down, eventually pulling the battery in frustration.

Pulled the SD card, and it's now quick as you like!:):)
 
try formatting the SD card - back up the dat a on it first obviously - worked for me

(format it first on the pc then on the phone)
 
Hey there, I have the same problem after intensive use and after 8 hours I eventually pulled the battery. I tried all solutions above but it didn't work for me.

Now it might be just on my desire, but everytime I use Advanced Task Killer to kill all apps (without ever running any apps in between) the available memory would decrease with 1 to 2 megabytes.

So I did a test.
1: I turned my desire off. (needed to pull battery in case of intensive use)

2: I turned my desire on.

3: Then doing nothing I turned it off again. Guess what, It turned off in a few seconds.

4: I then turned it on again and I used Advanced Task Killer a few times (without ever running any apps in between)

5: Then I turned it off. But it took a full 4 minutes to turn off.

So my guess is that Advanced Task Killer is the app that doesn't close properly each time it is used.

If the people here could reproduce the same problem we would know what to do and inform the creator of ATK.

Mine shuts down faster when I use ATK to end running processes. Since the OTA update yesterday I tried shutting down again without using ATK and It shut down in about the same time of c1 min. So still puzzled what causes long shut downs.
 
I did away with beebplayer yesterday and no longer have this issue. Could be coincidence, but might be worth a shot
 
I have an unbranded CPW phone and the *only* apps that I have installed are

  • Google Sky Map
  • Audio Manager
  • National Rail

So, nothing that looks particularly dodgy there.

What I have found is that after several days of intense use just using the inbuilt applications (browser, alarm clock, news, SMS, email, Maps) the phone *will* take around five minutes to shut down.

I rather doubt that there is a hardware problem, since the phone operates well under normal circumstances. More likely to be a software issue.

The recent OTA update did not fix it.
 
The folks on XDA believe it's to do with the backup feature.

I too notice if a long period since last power down it takes a while to shut down. I guess the backup process is either hanging, or simply a long process.

Anyone with the new OTA update found this resolved?
