Root Desire won't boot - Didn't change anything?

Hi guys,

So yesterday, for some reason a lot of my apps were not opening and were being force closed. So I decided to try turning my phone off and on to see if it helped. Except, it never came back on again :p

I've rooted my phone, its on a MildWild ROM, can't remember the exact name, I did it a few months ago, can probably find out the details once I get back home tonight. I can get to the Hboot/Fastboot so if you need any details from there just ask :)

When I turn the phone on, it shows the white HTC screen, then goes to a black screen with the MildWild logo on it, that refreshes every couple of seconds.

The weird thing is I didn't do anything to my phone yesterday, no new apps, no tinkering with the ROM, no changing settings, nothing

So no idea what caused this. Hoping you guys can help me save it without having to resort to flashing a new ROM/doing a factory reset? Don't really want to loss everything on it

Thanks for any help you can give :)

This is one reason why backups are important: Titanium and nandroid (they serve different purposes). I'm guessing you don't have these though.

A few non-destructive things you can try (in this order would be my suggestion):

* pull the battery out and leave it out for a couple of minutes (to let all volatile storage discharge). Then try again.

* go into recovery and clear cache and dalvik cache. Then reboot. If this works the boot will take longer than usual.

* if you still have the ROM zip file, flash it again from recovery (without wiping - it's the same ROM so you shouldn't need a wipe).

If none of those work it is harder to think of things that don't involve data loss. Trouble is I don't know the cause. Could be bad data, problem with sd card, hardware fault, so all we can do is try things and gather information.

Can you tell us what it says on the hboot screen? S-On or Off (and any pink writing at top if off), PVT number are most important. And have you noticed other problems before this (eg crashes or soft reboots, especially when used heavily)?

Thank you for the advice!

Unfortunately my phone was stuck on the rebooting loop in my pocket without me realising so the battery is now dead.
So I'll have to wait until I get home to recharge and try the things you've suggested.

I did have Titanium and nandroid, however I haven't backed anything up since I flashed a new ROM about 4 months ago :o

Wow, that was surprisingly easy. I just deleted the dalvik cache, rebooted and it started fine.

Thanks a lot :)

Great. I was worried it would be something worse :)

But clearing dalvik is always worth a go. One problem with an unrooted phone is that you can't do that without wiping everything.
