Desk Top Software

Hi

Not only am I a newbie but I don't even possess a device. I do, though, have a daughter that has the Desire HD.

As a Blackberry user and forum contributor, I bang on about regular backing up, updating software using the PC not OTA. Daughter does not have a PC so I said, "no worries, I'll do it for you."

So, after Googling for answers, without success, I thought, these guys will know what I need.

Can someone please point me in the right direction for software for the pc (on XP) to perform a backup and to maybe update the device software.

Thanks
Steve

To back up everything on the phone you need to root it and use rom manager, HTC Sync will also back up certain things. Software updates will be pushed to your phone when they are available, check by pressing the following Menu > Settings > About Phone > System Software Updates > Check now.

Rooting is a process by which you gain full access to the phone. While it's a very useful tool, it does void your warranty and to he honest it's probably not necessary in this case.

Whch data do you want to backup? That really dictates your best option.

Good question. Any personal data is the answer; contacts, SMS, Email, music, pictrues. Anything that would be irreplaceable assuming the device was lost, stolen, destroyed.

Your contacts should be backed up to your google account anyway. To check, open your gmail account via the web, click contacts and see if the contacts on your handset correspond with what you see up on there.

For SMS, there's a 3rd Party App called SMS Backup & Restore which a lot of people use, but any of these should do what you need.

For Pics, Vids etc, Install HTC Sync, it should be able to back up everything else.

Does that help?

I would recommend SMS backup and restore too, which stores then as an XML file on the sdcard. If you use that and then copy the contents of your sdcard to a PC, that's your SMS, photos and videos taken care of.

As for your contacts and email, that's a bit more complicated since they can be setup in a number of ways (contacts can be SIM/Phone/Google for example). If you do as El Presidente advised, and check if all of the contacts are visible on the gmail website, that will let us know how they're set up. As for the email, is it a gmail account we're talking about?

Take a look at MyPhoneExplorer (Google it). I use it mainly for syncing with Outlook on my desktop for contacts and calendar but I also use it to sync my music (I have 22GB+ on a 32GB sd card) and for uploading piccies etc. It can also install apps onto the phone but won't backup your apps.

For personal data this should be fine. App on the phone and PC client though....

Many thanks guys. Daughter might be round later today and I will have her study the answers and take if from there. Can't see rooting being an option vis-a-vis no warranty.

Don't root, it annoys me that it is the first thing someone suggests in a forum like this, you state in your post you are new to the phone, some people are so irresponsible.

Like other posters have said since you can easily backup all your personal info using apps, ok you may lose a few settings / tweaks / ringtone settings if you lost your phone and had to rebuild it on a new model, but that is not a big deal, as long as you have your personal data.

Irresponsible, lmao. Rooting is so easy anybody could do it, Yeah it voids your warranty, but guess what, You can unroot it just as easily so warranty valid again, ROM Manager backs up literally EVERYTHING, So when you restore from it you don't need to do anything at all to get your phone back to how it was. Also I would recommend Titanium Backup (less fiddly than ROM Manager), Again it needs root but it backs up stuff that other apps (besides rom manager) can't, Idividual settings, apps, bluetooth pairings, any accounts setup on the phone like google, e-mail, it will restore all these even with the passwords.

The best thing we can do is explain all the options, and their respective advantages/disadvantages, so that others can make the choice that suits them :)

That would be good. Personally I would take the root option but daughter might not see it that way. Its her device.
