Root Details on Installing Nov OTA to Rooted Incredible

I am getting an error when applying the update.zip that says "E:failed to verify whole_file signature" and "e:signature verification failed". What am I doing wrong?

Great set of instructions, thank you. For the two people above asking for help because they are Mac users, I did all this on my MacBook without much of an issue (at least so far). The main difference between Mac and Windows that I've seen is getting into the adb shell on a Mac. I'm not sure how to do that or whether it is even possible. I've tried getting into the adb shell on my Bootcamp Windows partition but haven't had any luck. I haven't really needed to use the shell however because any moving/deleting of files that I've needed to do I just did with Root Explorer. I had saved the crapware files on my SD card and moved them back. This list from jonamerica Howto: Root the HTC Droid Incredible - Technology - Jonamerica.com (scroll down to Remove Bloat section) was quite helpful both in knowing what crapware I was removing and where from and now, when this OTA was bugging me, in restoring it before following the rest of Bob's instructions. I am now back up and running, loaded up with Verizon crapware, but rooted.

I also did this on a mac and had no issues. I didn't use an adb shell and similarly am not sure if you even need to. I downloaded the links on my mac and following Bob's instructions renamed them and placed them on my sd card. I did each step one at a time. Thus, I only placed one file on my sd card at a time. May have gone slower but I didn't mess up my phone. Thanks Bob. And good luck to others.

The step to put clockwork back on the phone isn't working for me. I copy the file and rename but when I reboot it doesn't apply the zip.

Getting the same issue. Everything went fine up to this point. I briefly see it trying to load PB31IMG.ZIP but it says, I think, "No image" and/or "failed to load image", it goes by pretty quick. I know it hasn't worked because it just sits at this screen and upon trying to go to the next step it doesn't load clockwork in recovery I just get the black screen with the red triangle and !.

The phone works otherwise and it still has S-Off but I am no longer rooted as far as I can tell.

This is exactly where I am at right now. Someone suggested a fat32 formated sd card but I dont have a spare one to do that with.

Ok, I backed up my sd card and formatted it to FAT32 and retried Step 14. It looks like it is working because there is a message that briefly displays that it is parsing the file. Here's my new question: What do I do now? HBOOT never prompts me to reboot and if I go into FASTBOOT and do a reboot from there the phone loads but when I reboot into HBOOT I still can't run recovery.

Nice, finally got the nerve to try this and it worked. I thought I was missing two files VzNav.odex and VZW_Skype.odex but I sort of remembered there not being there when I initially wanted to get rid of the junk. So I tool the chance and it worked like a charm. Settings->About phone->Update now says my system is up to date and Yea...I have more crapware :)

Thanks Bob for the amazingly clear instructions!
Thanks dsb9938 for the kick start and for having the guts to be one of the first to try and do this.

Yes, I did the exact same thing, following the instructions pretty much to the letter. I read somewhere else that the USB cable supplied with the phone is pretty crappy and can sometimes corrupt files during transfer. I did not have the issue, even though it was a pain to connect and reconnect just to transfer files. Perhaps others are getting corrupted files. Bluetooth transfer or Dropbox might be a help.

I didn't have these files either, not sure why, maybe because I never launched the apps. Worked fine for me as well, and they now show up in my apps.

After screwing up my phone trying this process (frozen after update installed at quietly brilliant screen, after what seemed to be a good install) i was able to roll back to a early nandroid backup luckily. Phones working again, but still need to install the update. Think im going to try hitting update through the official means and see if the update goes through this time. (still have root and s off after my rollback so we'll see)

For those who can't get clockwork to reinstall...I took my sdcard out, backed it up to my pc, formatted to Fat32, tried again and it installed instantly. So Fat32 is def the answer.

Holy Cow! If you've edited your build.prop file, you need to put it back EXACTLY the way you found it or else this process will fail every time!! Took me a few minutes to remember what all I had change. :)

Would be nice if this thread was a sticky. It helped me immensely.

Thise "errors" in HBOOT about the PB31IMG that flash by during HBOOT's startup are normal. I see them every time I start HBOOT. That's just it looking for the "auto-run" files it knows about. Those of you who can't install Clockwork from the PB31IMG file ... is it REALLY at the ROOT of your SD card? If you have a > 2Gb SD, is it formatted FAT32? The file I put up for download is the exaxt file I used, so I know it is good.

I had trouble installing PB31IMG as well, but after reformatting my 2GB sdcard as FAT32 it worked fine. Now just need to install superuser again and we're good to go.

Just to be clear, after booting into HBOOT does it do the install automatically or is there something that needs to be done to initiate the install? I thought it did it automatically as I see those files being processed before being dumped back to the bootloader menu.

I haven't spent a lot of time in HBOOT so I'm somewhat unfamiliar with it's inner workings.

I did this process as well and it worked perfectly. I did shoot myself in the foot once our twice, but they were easily corrected. So here are some common issues and how to resolve them.

1. make sure the com.cequint.platform.odex and com.cequint.platform.jar files are restored to /system/framework (NOT /system/app)

2. make sure your SD card is formated in FAT32

3. make sure you have enough space on your SD card

4. Make sure the update.zip files is NOT name update.zip.zip as often happens when renaming the file in Windows

5. The VZSkype and VZNav odex files are only created if you launched the apps, so if you don't have them no big deal.

If anyone deleted the bloatware and needs the files, let me know and I'll try to post them in Dropbox tonight.

"2. Restore any crap-ware that was hidden into to their original places. IMPORTANT! I put all the crapware into /system/app.crap and /system/framework.crap. Move that stuff back into their respective non-crap folders and delete the crap folders. You can use a convenient root shell (Android SDK and HBOOT drivers required on PC):"

How important is this? I don't remember what I removed, but it was a lot. This really seems like a pain.

It will faill if you don't moved everything back.

When I press Vol Up + Power to reinstall Clockwork, my phone vibrates 3 times and that's it. lol

I wish the SD card trick worked for me. I guess I am without root. boooo. oh well, maybe I will try later.

I made the same mistake. Try Vol Down + Power (not up).

For anyone that needs them, someone over on the XDA forums shared this link with me, it supposedly has all of the apk's and odex files that come stock: http://www.chadhaney.com/droidIncDefault/
I was told that once the apps are back on the phone, you need to check the permissions to make sure they're all -rw-r--r-- and owned by root:root, can anyone verify this?
Once I put the missing apps back on the phone, should I format my SD card as FAT32 just to be safe, or wait and see if I have any problems?

Also, has anyone tried applying this through ROM Manager? Someone said over on XDA that they used it to apply the update.zip just like applying a ROM and it seemed to work.

Your SD card needs to be FAT32 for it to work properly. You might as well reformat to FAT32 instead of going through all the steps, and failing anyway.

Finally got it to work, for some reason the clockworkmod file on the site at the begining of the thread wasn't working for me. I used the one listed here and once I boot into HBOOT it asked if I wanted to apply the update so I did and when prompted to reboot I did.

I am now rooted again!
