I have done a search and read through but I'm still stuck with this problem!

I have a 2GB SD Card which is empty, is there any way to have Apps?Updates going straight to the SD Card??

Thanks in advance if anyone can help

ok - so you are not rooted, do you have android 2.2 froyo installed at all, or are you still on version 2.1?

have you installed a custom rom at all yet?
 
I think, I'm sorry to say, you are stuck with what you have for the time being, unless you can root & can install a custom 2.2 rom, which is not hard, but it has to be your choice and if you do not wish to then you will have to wait for others to come and answer to see if there is a solution that fits your needs :)

Yes.

Install Clockwork Recovery, root the phone install a custom rom 2.2, everybody seems to like Swedish Spring, I like Pauls custom bake one, which I still use and always go back to.

It's not hard, just hard to get your head around the terminology, and now I love my OSF, I would hate to have to go back to 2.1 unrooted :)

Bottom line, if you are unsure about something, ask, there is no such thing as a dumb question - we were all newbs at one time or other :)
 
Yes you do but both apps and contacts can be backed up. I used Backup Everything from Market. My contacts were in Google.

You do not lose any Apps or Contacts by simply rooting your phone!!

Rooting just allows to do stuff on your phone, which Android will not allow you to do if not rooted.

To root, you don't even need to be connected to PC/MAC/Computer......

use the (modified for OSF/Blade) Z4Root App for permanent root: Permanent root for 2.2 Blades! - Android @ MoDaCo


Now, flashing a new ROM via ClockworkMod, you should wipe your phone, as outlined here: Best 'clean up' before flashing ROMs - Android @ MoDaCo

Suggested wipes:

Under advanced:
Dalvik cache

Under mount and storage:
Format /system
Format /cache
Format /data
Format /boot
If you want to clean your external partition on SD card too, ONLY then format /sd-ext

Under main menu
wipe user data
wipe cache

Installing a new ROM is like starting afresh with new software on your handset. All apps and data will be deleted. However, once rooted, before you install clockwork and your new ROM there's an app called Titanium Backup which will backup your user apps and data associated with them (game saves, configs etc). When you've got your new ROM on there. Install TB and it will read the backups from the SD Card and restore them and all data for you.

So if I Root will my Phone stay as it is? I am using 2.1 and if so will I then be able to save Apps ETC to the SD Card?

Most importantly will I be Not losing any Apps/Contacts simply by Rooting??

Sorry, maybe it's just me, but the guy (OP) asked if rooting wipes his Apps/Contacts.....

Unless I am totally mistaken, rooting has zero effect on installed Apps or Contacts........No :D

Yes, but you will be able to do more dangerous stuff....but your Apps and Contacts etc, are still there.

This is where the dangerous bit comes in......2.1 does not natively support App2sd...that came with the next version, Froyo 2.2.....

However, the Darktremor A2SD scripts will run on 2.1, but the ROM has to support this, and I don't think Orange Stock 2.1 does, at least I can't find any info about it. So, I don't think so.....sorry.
 
imo, I think the easiest tech solution would be link2sd:

[App] Link2SD - xda-developers

This only requires 2 x fat32 partitions on your sd card, and I think the OP would find this method the easiest to accomplish rather than an ext2/3 partition?

I would go for a 1.5gb/500mb split personally on a 2gb sd card.

Hi Prez....

this works, and you don't need to use ADB or Terminal commands at all, just ModInstallLocation App or Move2SD Enabler, but it is for Froyo(2.2) and up, just an enhancement of the Apps2SD introduced with Froyo, to allow more Apps to be moved under the Google/Android native Apps2SD.

The above Apps and procedures just use FAT32, no need for ext partition(s) on the SD card.

I don't think it works with 2.1, regardless of ROM. There is no SetInstallLocation command support on 2.1.

However, as you know, DT A2SD was around well before Froyo, and works on 2.1, but perhaps not on all ROM's....I would like to find out if it can work on Stock Orange Eclair, coz I don't know.

I must say, lfc4ever's suggestion, Link2SD App looks very good, as it allows you the choice of what Apps are moved to SD......which is what is missing in DT's A2SD, IMHO.
