Help DHD connexion to PC + HTC Sync install problem

Hi, I completely new (and newb) to Android and the Desire HD

I tried to connect my DHD to my PC and it won't recognize it. I followed all the instructions, but nothing will work. I checked in multiple forums and there doesn't seem to be any solution to this. Plus I tried to install HTC Sync 3 by downloading directly from HTC but the application won't even install.

I'm running windows 7 ultimate x86

Does someone have any idea how to fix this meta problem?
thanks

A few more of the steps you followed plus some idea of any error messages would be useful.

I run Windows XP (32-bit) and gave up with HTC Sync. I use MyPhoneExplorer (Google for it) now.

Well, I simply followed the HTC instructions to connect my phone to my comp and then extract HTCsync.exe from the sd card. The thing is, when I connect my desire to my pc, it doesn't recognize my phone (and I had selected "disk drive" as the default usb connection type). On the other hand, Windows installed the "HTC Android phone usb device" properly, but still won't recognize my phone when I plug it.

I told myself that i would bypass this by downloading the application directly from HTC, but when i launch the install, it automatically says: Error reading setup initialization file (I closed all programs and temporarily disabled my anti-virus as it was recommended). This phone is seriously starting to piss me off!!!

I would welcome any idea on how to fix this!!!
thanks

Do a search, here and other forums, for issues with W7 64-bit. I'm sure I've seen them mentioned but not taken too much notice as I'm still on XP. I'll take a leap into the W7 future one of these days ... :D

As for the error, it could be a damaged download. Try the download again.

I wouldn't blame the phone as that's not the problem. It's the guys who write HTC's SW! It's not specific to them either as Nokia also have the same issues with their SW (been a Nokia user for many years).

Hi there. A common problem many forget, is that the sync program might already be installed. Although your error message did not indicate this, error checks and messages for computers can work in funny ways. Go to your control panel, under programs, and uninstall anything that has to do with HTC (drivers, sync, etc.). Then redownload the file from HTC and try again. Hopefully this time it will work.

Also as other stated in this thread, the sync software is not the best, but it seems to work fine for me. Although I wish HTCSense would come up soon. Would make everything much easier I think (unless you use music, documents and pictures to sync with your phone, then you kinda need the sync software). The current sync software is confusing, badly designed for interface, and setup is really horrible, there are not many options to chose from.

PS! For future reference, shitty Windows is trying to make all automation when it comes to new hardware that is plugged in. I recommend never to plug in your new devices to the computer, before you have checked whether the producer has their own drivers they want you to install before using it (in this case the HTC sync software might have some inbuilt drivers for the phone)

Hmmm. Strange. HTC Sync doesn't work for me, though I forget the exact problems as I tested it back at the end of October, but HTC Sense seems to ... :D

As I said, I use MPE and that syncs Outlook contacts/calendar to the phone plus files. And it's free.

Oh, I do use HTC sync to download any apk files I get outside of the market but I've just noticed that MPE also has an option for that as well so maybe I'll just ditch Sync altogether!

Yea, HTC Sense works for those who got their phone and signed up pre 15th of December (dunno the exact date, but from what I've gathered it was about there). After this, HTC decided to shutdown/limit the functionality, as they discovered some stuff that didn't work as it should or something, I guess. So I only have limited access to dashboard, and even then many of the functions I should be able to use don't work.

As for HTC sync, I guess MPE is just as good a replacement. I don't know why my HTC sync works, but it does. Hmmm, have you checked the support section for HTC Desire HD, or just the general support when downloading HTC sync? As I went to the product page, then found the Desire HD, then in a minitab chose downloads, and got a specific Sync program for the all new Froyo. Maybe thats the problem? =)

I've sorta been following the threads and saw that. I don't actually use it myself as I knew there were problems. I've rung my phone and checked it's location (my house!) but not tried the other stuff. I'm waiting for HTC to sort it out properly.

I hadn't checked for a while as MPE does all I need but I see that there is a later version than the one I have installed. I may download it but, apart from whatever problems I had, it doesn't seem to offer anything like the control that MPE does. It reminds me of the last SW suite I used from Nokia (Ovi Suite) where they took away all the control (compared to the previous PC Suite) and "assumed" they know better than you what you want to do. Wrong!
