Hi peeps, My son has a DHD locked to Orange. Was wondering if it would be a mamoth task to unlock it and get rid of the Orange firmware for something unbranded?

Any help would be much appreciated :). Martin.

Not sure about just unlocking but there is a great guide to rooting the phones on here which will do what you want an so much more.

A toolkit known as AAHK will unlock from Orange, root it, and install a basic android 2.1 unbranded firmware.

Then you just have to pick your shiny new ROM. I like Android Revolution HD 7.0.4 .

Remember to backup all your SMSs and contacts first with SuperBackup.

Thanks for that. Where is the best place to find and read up on the toolkit please, and are there any risks involved or anything that can go wrong easily? Thanks, Martin.

It's on XDA.
[TOOL] Advanced ACE Hack Kit (12062012) w/ENG Support - xda-developers

As the dev says you must RTFM, the program asks for certain information before it'll even run.

Make sure you have a full battery, USB debugging is on, and HTC Sync and other drivers uninstalled. Install the supplied drivers.

Other than that it's click and go. You will lose absolutely everything on the phone, so ensure you've backed up / exported anything you need.
Anything on the SD card will be fine, only the phone memory is wiped.

Brilliant! Thanks very much for the info Guys, I will give this a go tonight and let you know how i get on. Many thanks, Martin.

P.S. Would this RUU http://db.tt/71wHEg87 be suitable to flash at the very end?

Yep. I ran it recenlty. If it doesnt recognise the pone at first , you may have to boot into Hbooot and then plug it in and run it . ( HBOOT = TUrning on with power button + volume down )

So.....just to let you know everything went nice and smooth with not 1 problem, i guess i got lucky:D. Thanks to everyone for their input on this i'm made up! ..........Martin.

Yes it recognised the phone and went on no problem, it went a lot smoother than i expected almost too good to be true but it's spot on ;)...........Martin.
