Root Dialer using energy & battery losing it

First, some background: my cell phone (a Sprint-branded EVO 4G) is mostly used as a PDA (mail, GPS, etc.). I make, on average, 2-4 calls per month.

In the last week or so, the battery usage app shows that the Dialer is using 9% to 30+% and I have noticed that my battery depletes more throughout the day than over the previous several months (a month ago, a day's usage would take me down to 60%, but now it's going down to 20%).

I checked my usage online (my provider is EcoMobile) and there are no extra calls, texts or 3G data usage. I installed the Avast! anti-virus app, but it didn't find anything.

Any explanations/suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

Jeff

The phone is rooted, but I did not replace the ROM (I just disabled bloatware to free up memory).

Another side-effect is that the phone cannot load the security update HTC has been repeatedly pushing at me the last several weeks.

Hey Jeff!
I moved your thread to the root forums here:)

As far as that update (OTA), don't accept it.
Accepting OTA's will only complicate matters and is not recommended :)

Anyways, have your tried clearing the cache and dalvik cache from within recovery?
What recovery do you have?
Are you "s-off" or "unlocked, s-on" ?

Better yet, if we need to troubleshoot some more, can you post back here what your bootloader screen says?

Sorry for all the questions :)

Hi, Mike:

I'm not as fluent in the terminology as I'd like, so I don't know about dalvik cache, nor any idea which 'recovery' I have. I'm also very hesitant to do any more actual rooting as I have a paid app with limited re-installations.

The boot screen reads as follows:

*** UNLOCKED ***
SUPERSONIC EVT3 SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-2.18.0001
MICROP-041f
TOUCH PANEL-ATMEL224_16ab
RADIO-2.15.00.12.19

Clearing the Caches will not have any affect on the status of your apps. So you won't have to worry about having to reinstall anything. Depending on the rom you have you the easiest way to get you to recovery will probably be thru your power down screen. When you hold the power button down a drop down box appears. When you select reboot is there a option for recovery?

Edit: recovery is where you will wipe/clean the caches. When we know which recovery you have we can give you more specific instructions

When I long-press the Power button, I see three options: Turn Off, Restart or Airplane Mode. Selecting Restart does not give me any options; it just shows the "htc EVO 4G" screen for a while before progressing to the Sprint screen, the 4G screen and, eventually, the operation screen (it's takes much longer to reboot than to turn off and turn on).

When I pop the battery out and in, then simultaneously press the Power and Volume Down buttons, I see the screen where I got the configuration data listed in an earlier post, but also 5 HBOOT options:
FASTBOOT
RECOVERY
CLEAR STORAGE
SIMLOCK
HBOOT USB

As I stated before, I am more than a little hesitant to select any of these options as an experiment. Which of these will not erase anything?

Regards,

Jeff

When I can do it, I will. Right now, every time I pop the battery back in, the phone immediately boots (and the long boot process), so I can't get to the Safe Mode screen.

when you say "safemode" do you mean the bootloader(power+vol down)?

there should be no reboot to get to the bootloader after pressing and holding power+vol down so i'm confused.

Safe Mode is how htc's technical support refers to the simultaneous Power+Volume Down boot, but their instructions say to pop the battery out and in first.

Earlier today, whether I powered down before popping the battery or not, the phone automatically rebooted as soon as the battery was re-installed, but I just now got it to go into Recovery.

The screen reads as follows:
ClockworkMod Recovery v5.0.2.2

- reboot system now
- apply update from sdcard
- wipe data/factory reset
- wipe cache partition
- install zip from sdcard
- backup and restore
- mounts and storage
- advanced
- power off
- +++++Go Back+++++

So what do you recommend? I am leving the phone as is, with external power applied.

interesting i never heard of that. for most here on the net, it is called the bootloader.

anyways, i would suggest that you switch recoveries. clockwork mod just does not do very well on the og evo. it just does not wipe well at all and has created more problems then it is worth.

if you want to switch i would use this guide here:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...-rooting-gingerbread-2-3-5-dummies-guide.html.
go to the HTCdev method and skip down to step 2 and just follow directions to get a better recovery(amon ra2.3)

this is all up to you, but many here will suggest the same thing

so now that you are in recovery select wipe cache partition. next go back to the main menu and under advanced select wipe dalvik cache.

wiping those two usually help fix most issues and bugs or glitches. but like i said before cwm just does not wipe well. so i would suggest for now to wipe the cache's 3 times just to be sure.

Okay, I have wiped cache and Dalvik cache (3x each).

The Battery Monitor app doesn't list the Dialer at all, now, with WiFi & Cell Standby taking the most, followed by Display and descending rapidly from there (I wonder what "akmd" is).

Let's see how that goes.

Thanks for the help.

Jeff

Both posts seem identical; were you referring to a link in the link?

Lots of apps there that sound interesting. I wouldn't mind altering my phone if it improved battery life or freed memory, but I don't want to keep re-installing apps and re-creating my screens, so will any of those backup utilities copy the extra apps and re-install them if I were to switch ROMs?

sorry site went down and created a double post which i just fixed:o

to backup apps i would use titanium backup. you should also get the prokey as well as it unlocks more features from the free app.

before you flash other roms and kernels i would really suggest switching recoveries to either amon ra 2.3 or smelkus recovery. both are really good and way better then cwm.

The Dialer is still using a bunch of energy (10%), even though I've made only 1 outgoing call in the past 5 days.

Still running the original ROM.

Jeff

An update.

As it turns out, I have *not* rooted my phone (the instructions I got from htc's web site apparently did not work because I tried to install a backup program that requires a rooted phone and it failed for specifically that reason).

The Dialer is still using significant energy (20% as I write this).

I rarely use my EVO 4G as a phone. Most of its time is spent on Gmail, GPS data logging and Facebook.

The 20% energy usage was 3 days after the last outgoing message and 5 days after the last outgoing call, so why is it sitting at 20% of the total energy usage?

And why would it be sending and receiving so much data (607 KB & 539 KB)?

Even with a 1 Amp charger, the phone would not increase its charge level until I turned Wi-Fi OFF.

An hour or so later, I received e-mail because something had turned Wi-Fi ON.

Also, Wi-Fi is sending 3x as much data as it is receiving (1140 KB vs 349 KB) for no good reason I can think of.

Is it possible that the NSA is tapping my phone?

LOL the nsa....no i doubt that....why would they want to?

and just to be sure, do you have the superuser app in your app drawer? you can even download an app called root checker to check to be sure you have root rights.

if your bootloader says this still then:
*** UNLOCKED ***
SUPERSONIC EVT3 SHIP S-ON
HBOOT-2.18.0001
MICROP-041f
TOUCH PANEL-ATMEL224_16ab

you are almost rooted. as long as you have su in your app drawer and it is running then you are rooted.

are you on a stock rom or a custom rom? did you flash the su file after you were rooted?

i would probably try a custom rom like mikg or deck's reloaded(but that is an aosp rom). they are way better then stock and you most likely will not have this issue.....that is what i would recommend.

I am using the stock ROM (I have disabled some of the bloatware, but not deleted it).

Don't know where to get the su file you referenced, nor where the 'app drawer' is located (I thought everything goes in the root). Would adding this file and booting the phone cause me to lose any installed apps?

Jeff

The app drawer is just another reference to your apps in general. If you have SU (superuser) it should show as just another app with the others. Most all roms that you would flash will have the SU app as part of the developers rom package. If you are still on the "stock" rom it would not be included. It will not affect any app you currently have installed.

The purpose of the SU is to grant permission to the apps that use the root part of you phone that you could not use otherwise. I added a link to SU below if you need it.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.noshufou.android.su&hl=en

thanx biker57.

in addition to installing the su app you will still need to flash the su file as well. you can find it here: http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...-rooting-gingerbread-2-3-5-dummies-guide.html it should be in the htcdev method.....just skip down to step 3. i would recommend that you choose the how to "flash a rom" instructions and flash mikg3.11.....it is waaaaaaay better then stock, yet it will still feel like you are on stock. it is not themed so you should enjoy it.......i can almost ensure you that your issue will go away;)
