Dialing numbers without area code...

Hello all,
I have a CDMA Desire with USCC running 2.1 unrooted. Currently all the contacts are stored on Google and in the form of 1234567. I am slowly changing them all to the form of 123-456-7890 so that when someone calls, the phone recognizes the number.
(Note/Explanation: When the phone receives an incoming call, it shows the area code, regardless of if it is local or not. The only way as far as I know for it to match contact to number is to have the area code in the stored contact)

However when I do that I have another little issue... when I dial a local contact in the form of 1234567 it does not show it as being a contact. The only way for me to dial a number and have it recognize it as a contact is to dial as 1234567890 (the full 10 digit number).

From what i read online, this is due to HTC Sense, not an actual android bug.

Before someone gores ahead and starts with "Root the phone, flash CM6, problem gone", let me just say that is not happening. End of story. The phone is a gift for my mother and she will most likely take it to USCC without consulting me first and then have her warranty void.

Any ideas or apps to resolve this would be great.

P.S. I can't think I am the only one bugged by this, but could not find any similar threads with searching.
 
I may be wrong but I don't think there is a work around.

I don't consider it a bug as I think it is intentional to make the phone universal. In the US, your cell phones get numbers with the local area code. In the UK, all mobile numbers start with 07.... regardless of where you are. So you have to put the full number in your contacts for both mobiles and landlines.

I, for one, enter all my contacts with full numbers including country codes as I have phone numbers for the US, UK and elsewhere.

I think you (your mom) will just have to bite the bullet and store the full number on all contacts.

Well, I started to store them all with the area code, however when she dials a local number she doesn't dial an area code, thereby causing the phone to not recognize it as that contact. Only solution I have hit upon is to store the number twice in the contact, one in each form.

I know, and I would if it was my phone. From what I gather it its a issue with htc sense. Thank you both for your efforts.
