Root Did someone order some Overclocking goodness?

Sorry, I am too excited. I haven't loaded it up yet but just saw that Pershoot just released an Overclock kernel up to 1.4 ghz.

I'll be the guinea pig. haha

Kernels are available for both Froyo and GB. Yay!

Update: Added a pic. Quadrants went up to 2800+ average. The highest was 2951. Makes Vegan GB run smoother and apps load super fast. Youtube is still choppy. We really need hardware acceleration on the GB roms.:(
The kernel is preset to Ondemand. No noticeable battery temp issues. It does warm up a little if you decide to crank up the max and min settings to 1.4 ghz. I wouldn't recommend that. I'll keep the tab running on Vegan GB to test battery life. The OC kernel has reduce voltages so I'm hoping that battery life doesn't take too much of a hit.

More than likely, I'll go back to Vegan 5.1.1 with OC because I can't stand not having hardware acceleration. I have a feeling that with the OC kernel and my Vegan 5.1.1 setup, I will have better performance. I'll go back to Vegan GB when the video issues are resolved.

Any updates? Does it still seem to be working well? Thanks for being the guinnea pig! I bought the tablet for my wife who is not interested any of this stuff, so I have to make sure something works before I foist it on her. Right now I've got her GTab running Vegan 5.11 and its working great.

I'm still running Vegan GingerBread RC1 with pershoots overclock kernel. I told myself if I was going to go back to Vegan 5.1. that I would wait until it's time to recharge. My battery is at 78% percent right now which is really good.

I might stick with Vegan GB and live with the lack of hardware acceleration. I found that viewing you tube vids through the browser and other 3rd party apps is actually ok. I haven't tried all of my movies yet but most run fine using rockplayer and vital player.

Anyways, so far so good. There's a definite increase in overall performance. It's most noticeable when opening and running apps. Apps open immediately. Web pages load super fast.

If you plan to load this kernel, let me know how it goes with Vegan 5.1.1. Remember to back up your ROM before installing the kernel. Also, don't set the minimum CPU frequency too high.

is this safe for the batter? im just wondering.. im planning to install this but im worried about the battery life, how was it in your GB? do you see any changes in the battery life after OCing?

Hi Marqueee

As with all mods and hacks, there can be drawbacks and from my experience not all devices are made equal. For me, I have not seen any significant battery life issues or overheating when using this kernel. Actually I have seen some improvement in my battery life. This can probably be attributed to the SetCPU app. With the OC kernel coupled with SetCPU, you can set the maximum and minimum CPU frequencies. For example, I have my SetCPU set at 1400 mhz max and 316 mhz min. This does not mean that my tablet runs at 1400 mhz all the time but when needed it'll boost my mhz when applicable. I have found that using SetCPU or similar apps, it actually helps with the battery life because the CPU is governored better than it would a Stock Gtab.

I also set profiles where if my tablet is asleep I can underclock my CPU to 800 mhz max. So when it's asleep, it doesn't drain the battery too much which increases my stand by battery life.

I have a Moto Droid that has been overclocked for over a year and it's still ticking. :D You just have to be smart about it. If and when other kernels are released with higher CPU speeds, it doesn't mean you should have to flash those kernels.

PS. Word of advice- If you plan to flash any kind of mod or ROM, I would always perform a back up. So if you mess up, you can always go back to the way it was.

i can't wait to get this loaded up! i was about to try VEGAn GB, but i think overclocked 5.1.1 is going to get a shot first.

:) i guess your right.. can you tell me how to flash this kernel right?

last night i tried to flash it with vegan GB edition and but when im accessing the net it hangs.. so i nvflash to vegan 5.1, i think 5.1 is still the best rom, GB lacks on hardware acceleration.. :( i think ill wait for the fix before i flash vegan GB..

so im just asking how to flash a kernel correctly, :) thank you in advance..

download and flash just as you did with VEGAn. (reboot to recovery, choose "install zip from sd", locate the kernel .zip file, and load)

I went ahead and did it while my wife wasn't watching :) and it worked great. I downloaded setcpu and now have her overclocked to 1.4 ghz running smoothly. I don't see any overheat issues or FC's. The only thing I don't have through setcpu is access to different governors or voltages. I have my droid 2 running at stock speed at an Ultra Low Voltage, runs great and battery lasts forever. I'd love to have these options with the wife's tablet.

That's cool! What she doesn't know won't hurt her. Ignorance is bliss sometimes. :p. I also asked the same questions as you. Here's his answer.

Pershoots kernel is a ULV kernel. The governor is set to ondemand. He also recommends to leave it as is. I'm sure the option for governors will be added to his future release. As with any kernel, maybe a ULV kernel might not work for other gtabs so he'll probably have to modify it.

it work great, but i've notice before and after i flash it battery life on vegan 5.1 it last shorter than tnt lite 5.0., which i have before i got vegan 5.1 and pershoot's kernel

do you experience these?

No, I didn't see a drop in battery life. I did show an increase in stand by time. Did you wipe davlik cache?

Quick update

After a week with pershoots kernels, I have not experienced any battery life issues. However, I have had a couple of lock ups while watching flash content on the browser and while testing HD vids on rockplayer. Other than that, no major problems.....yet.

I was OC'd to 1400 mhz max and have updated my kernel everytime Pershoot released an update. I have downclocked to 1200 mhz and so far no lockups and it's still super fast.

I might try some of Clemsyns kernels to see if there's a difference in speed and stability. Clemsyn has UV, Med and Xtra voltage kernels available so there's plenty to choose from so you can see which one fits your particular tablet. He even has a 1 ghz kernel which is undervolted if you don't really want to overclock your device. The lower voltages should improve battery life along with SetCPU.

Ok, I'm trying to run this, and I'm having some problems... I downloaded the .zip file (boot-cm_2632.36-oc-uv-xtra-vfp_fp-041411) and ran it through CWM, but when I opened SetCPU, it still didn't recognize the new kernel. It still says 1000mhz for a max speed. Any suggestions?

EDIT: Scratch that, I just didn't realize I had to run it from the Custom setting. It's showing up now.

Pershoots newest 4/28/11 GB kernel is sweet. Fixed youtube and it plays my 720p vid files. I usually use my normal "Buck the Bunny" test file to see if HD vids play and it worked with no issues with sound using Rock player and Vital player.

FYI- You're able to choose Auto detect rather than Custom in SetCPU. If for some reason SetCPU keeps force closing after you install his kernel, just uninstall and reinstall SetCPU. This happened to me.

Wow, you were right, this is amazing! That is close to a 50% boost in speed!!
(Using Vegan 5.1, setcpu, overclock.zip)
Those worrying about battery temp, with SetCCPU you can make profiles which it will default to if battery temp gets too high, battery charge gets too low, etc. Great little program.
