Did the update fix your 3G->1x swtiching and reception issues?

Well, I was going to post, but I think you've answered your own questions. Heh.

If you haven't upgraded to 2.0.1, give it a shot. It improved my 3G reception at work, though it didn't help at all with home.

Nope, I'm still getting it, maybe even more so than before. It's hard to tell because I never checked that much before the update. I've been watching it all day to see how it's going. I did notice that when it goes to 1x, it switches back to 3g relatively quickly and doesn't cause any real interference in what I'm doing, but I have to imagine it has an effect on my battery.

I think the phone just has a lousy antenna. I was using a BB Curve before on the same network, in the same places, and my coverage almost never dropped to 1x.

I am definitely getting it more than before...i reprogrammed and updated my prl to no avail.

Why is everyone returning the phone over this? Don't they realize it's most likely a software issue. Nothing you can do about it.

Given that I was able to significantly improve reeception, and have it remain stable w/my antenna mod, I don't think it's just a hardware issue.

FWIW guys, I'm posting from a Nokia N900, and there is no "typing lag", in posts, like there was w/the Droid.

Just had the update on the way home. Been here about two hours and have yet to see 3g. Before it switched in and out but was 85% 3g.

Stuck on 1 bar. Use to be 2 & 3

An hour to download net@nite?

indeed this sucks

The only 3g/1x switching I've ever seen is about the same as what I see on my Storm. Happens about at the same frequency in the same areas no difference between that of the Storm and the Droid. Except for the fact that the Droid tends to ride at about 8dBm better signal strength than the Storm. 8dBm is a LOT of difference!

Edit: I should add that every 3dB is a doubling of the signal. So 3dB is 2x, the next 3dB is 4x and 8dB is just shy of another 3dB. So my Droid is pulling in just shy of 8X more signal than my Strom.

There is definitely something flaky w/ the Droid's antenna. I have lived and worked in the same area w/ strong 3G signal for years. Never had this kind of signal issue w/ my old WinMo phone. Always had solid 3G signal indoors and out. Have the same problem others have described w/ 3G -> 1x switching when in my house and in my office w/ my Droid. Seems to be at random, and it'll sometimes go from 3 or 4 bars of 'good' signal to 0 then 1x. I'm afraid this may be a hardware issue.

I noticed today at school I went from 3 bars of 3G to 0 bars of 1x...I think it was having trouble with tower hand offs because I used the app cell finder and when I was on 1x the tower was farther away than when I was on 3G...still never bad this issue with any phone before.

That typing lag is a feature! Reminds me to slow down and not type something stupid. Right?

Upgraded to 2.0.1 this morning. Still having the same 3G -> 1x problem. No change. Arrrghhh.

Yea, i've noticed i still have that issue, but i believe it's the whole "previous alltel towers still not integrated into verizon's network yet" issue that's been previous reported. Hopefully that's the issue. Wish i could find out exactly what prl i have and could get one that others say they have on their alltel plan considering my area.

It depends if you have it both "enabled", and synching with "Gmail".

:p

I don't think that this issue is "only" affecting previous Alltel users...if that's what you mean. I was a brand new customer on VZ and had it w/ (2) different Droids.

First full day with the n900 and T-Mo, signal pegged on "full" w/3G and 3.5G, just like my Q on AT&T. With the AT&T SIM in the 900, I backed down to the EDGE network (900 doesn't support 3G on AT&T), and while I did have full bars inside my house, I did notice "DROID like signal loss" when moving the phone slightly. I think the inherent technology of CDMA and or spread spectrum, isn't served well by phones with marginal antennae/radios...especially when you move the phone a few inches and loose half your bars. Come to think of it, my Motorola V60 behaved the same on AT&T's "TDMA" network, and I wound up buying an external antenna/cradle combo for the house.

Now I'm really curious as to how the Milestone would fare vs. the DROID.

That very well may be true for some people, but i know for a fact though the "alltel issue" is what's affecting me. I just switched my preferred networks from automatic to home only and bam i'm down to 1x. Switched it back to automatic and i'm back up to 3g. I knew that there were some verizon 1x towers in the area due to relatives that have visited in years past and they would only have 1x service in this area.

I think it's supposed to switch to 1x during voice and sms communications. CDMA phones poll the towers for incoming calls at a configurable interval, during that polling process it'll use 1x....I'm guessing that most phones don't show the switch to 1x since it happens so fast, so perhaps the Droid is so fast and/or is checking the radio state so often that it is showing the switch.

Oh, i know about the voice using 1x. That's not a problem at all. It's just when we are on the net and it flip flops over to 1x is what we are talking about on here.

Yeah it's probably polling for incoming calls. Somebody should try to change the polling interval to something insanely high and see if it still happens.

Hrm.... i dunno if it's polling for incoming calls. I switched my prefrences from automatic to home only and it jumped directly to 1x and stayed there, couldn't get it to go to 3g. Switched it back to automatic and i'm back on a alltel tower surfing on 3g. It's def a issue with those of us in area's that were previously alltel. Verizon just hasn't fully integrated these towers into their network so they are seen as roaming still.

I have the same 3g switching problems and update did not help. And it is droid related as my i760 did not have any issues from my home. Goes from 3 bars to none and 3g to 1x frequently and is very slow and have connection issues. Not sure if I should exchange or return droid.

I have (still) the issue of switching between 3G and 1X at home. Nothing has changed after the update to 2.0.1.

I called Verizon to check on the frequency of the towers out here at home, so that I could pick up a repeater. Turns out I'm pretty much between two different towers, and part of the issues may be with that. They did say they were running a discount on the Network Extender doohickey.

So I decided I'd give the Network Extender a try, and ran up to a Verizon store. They had to check with a manager on the rebate, as the tech support guy called it... but they just gave me the discount right there.

Got the Network Extender home and plugged it in and let it fire up. The phone doesn't do anything apparent when it connects, but does play a little tone when you dial or receive a call.

Well, I spent almost 3 hours on the phone with the GF last night, and the call quality was great, and it didn't kill my battery.

From what I've seen, the problem is that if in a marginal signal area and you're on 1x, and start a "data connection" (NAV session), it stays on 1x, even if you move to a stronger signal area.

Just wanted to add that I have the same problem. My Droid (2.0.1) is going to 1x fairly often at home while my Blackberry always had strong 5 bar 3G coverage.

uugggg this issue is so frustrating.

when i am at work i am stuck in 1x and randomly it will kick into 3G and i am unable to send texts consistently. I never had this issue with my HTC6900 or my imagio. I was thinking that maybe verizon was just having issues in this area but my coworkers all have the touch pro 2's and they stay in 3G all the time.

I was trying to show off my droid to one of my coworkers and the internet was slow because of the connection and then the connection dropped a few times.
He has a touch pro 2 and stayed in 3G while standing next to me. He didn
